So it went back on the previous configuration? Are gravel traps even effective on such short distances to the wall?
I guess it’s more to avoid drivers to go too wide than a security measure.
The problem is that it is a tradeoff on driver safety. A gravel trap negates the advantage of going off track, but in turn it is less effective at slowing a car down in case of an accident, and so it leads to higher impact speeds.
Edit: Here’s a great video on the topic https://youtu.be/5N06z6VHXGA?si=6sLHvfF9N6dKOHc1

Exactly what I was thinking, how did it get approved in the first place I wonder 🤔

agreed
I have always wondered if there could be a little strip of gravel next to the track and then switch back the tarmac. It would keep drivers from dipping their toes off the track and still provide the safety of a tarmac run off.
A little strip of gravel is still capable of rolling a car, and also makes the track dirty when a car goes through it. A strip of grass could work.
I wonder if it would be better to put speed bumps like they do on chicanes in some tracks to negate the advantage, they could be positioned in an orientation so that the car is unlikely to go over them when running off track but will if going wider for the corner 🤔
Oic, those don’t work so well with F1 aero 😂

Could they be glued gravel traps? (Epoxy resin)
So, who beaches it first in FP1 ?
My money is on SainzSargeant. Not a single doubt in my mind.
