I just recently put a retro emulator on my Android tablet and tried playing FF1. It’s fun, but I don’t think I have the patience to complete the entire game. A lot of the spells don’t even seem to work correctly on the NES version.

Should I try a different FF game? Which version is recommended for someone whose experience with RPGs is limited to WoW, Stardew Valley, and Divinity: Original Sin 2?

I’d highly suggest the Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters if you can. Not only are they updated for modern systems, but they also have quality of life features that cuts down a bit on the monotony of grinding. For example, they have auto-battling toggles, boosts for extra exp/gil, etc. They are a great way to ease people into some of the older games, which can be a bit daunting. I highly recommend them!

For Final Fantasy II specifically, I would instead recommend the PSP version. Given how experimental its leveling system is, to use and abuse of it properly, the PSP and the (now delisted) OG Android version are the best ones, as they have more contents to keep the player entertained, instead of being just a grind galore, as well as offering far more options as to how to break the game to the player’s advantage.
