A mum had to take action to prove not every road in Wales has a 20mph speed limit after an insurance firm voided her son’s insurance policy.
Welsh television presenter Jess Davies explained that her younger brother saw his car insurance voided as a result of the vehicle’s black box recording his speed and seemingly deciding he was constantly exceeding the speed limit. It meant their mother had to take some unusual steps to show the firm that not every road in Wales now had a 20mph speed limit.
Nobody should ever under any circumstances install that bullshit spyware box in their car. Not sure if it’s avoidable over in Wales/the UK, but over here on the other side of the pond, the insurance company offers it as an option to get a safe driving discount.
It’s just a way for them to monitor you more and ding you for stupid things
I don’t think people really have much choice when they get one, the insurance premium is usually completely unaffordable without it
It saved me roughly the cost of my car per year. For young drivers it is quite unavoidable, just from a financial perspective.
It is bonkers how much data they harvest though. I did a GDPR request to take a peek and was given a spreadsheet with >1million fields.
Do you remember roughly how many readings there were per second when driving?
Sorry I tried to find the file again but it has got lost in my filesystem somewhere. I don’t think the data resolution was quite as much as a second though. Maybe about once a minute. They had the name of the road, and about 40 measurements with things like speed and acceleration.
Honestly the company I had (Admiral) was pretty good - I’ve heard of other companies giving 3 strikes and then insurance voided but they were pretty chill with a little bit of speeding.
Appreciate you taking the time to look for it and for the details you can remember.
