    Oblivion is cool, but I’m with everyone else that want to see Morrowind remade first. I’ve been personally holding out for the Skywind mod for several years now. I just checked up on it and, yeah, they’re still workin’ on it.

      A Morrowind remake would be fucking amazing. That game felt like it had a billion more things to do that oblivion and Skyrim put together. Maybe it’s the nostalgia talking but either way, I’d want it before oblivion any day.

        If Bethesda/Microsoft were smart, they’d put out a remastered trilogy collection for Series X/S and PC. Yeah, lean into the meme of re-releasing Skyrim again, but also give people the opportunity to try Morrowind and Oblivion with a new coat of paint.

        Morrowind would certainly be the one that would be harder to please people with, though. There are a lot of purists who prefer Morrowind’s style, but there are also a lot of people who want to play Morrowind with Skyrim’s gameplay.

        That’s why I think at least Oblivion is the easier obstacle to tackle. You could take all of Oblivion’s environments, quests, and music, plop it all on top of Skyrim’s gameplay, and get an objectively better experience. Skyrim is not without flaws either, but Oblivion was just a straight-up broken game in terms of gameplay progression.

        I’d only want a Morrowind remake with pretty significant tweaks. I’d want dice rolls gone for hits and leveling less convoluted at a minimum. Other nice things would be re-balancing weapons so others are viable beyond short/long blades would be nice, same with giving medium armor some love.

          But the dice rolls are what make the character stats more impactful, without them you could do a Skyrim and use whatever you pick up. They help simulate a more frenetic fighting than can be displayed within the game, with enemies dodging and parrying blows.

          That last sentence I kind of made up but it sounds good, and I like the dice rolls. Also the leveling is good, minus the incentive to never not jump for acrobatics strength buffs.

            The dice rolls just meant that if you have a weapon skill below about 30 you don’t hit anything ever, it didn’t simulate anything. If you want to show blocks and parries in a video game, then show them it’s not tabletop.

            The level system sucks in that you essentially want to build a character backwards and have major skills you didn’t actually use. Otherwise you leveled quickly but didn’t gain stats effectively.

              I mean, if you have a weapon skill below 30 I don’t know why you are using that weapon. The leveling system in vanilla Morrowind has a bunch of weird stuff that might even be bugs, like endurance not giving you extra hit points for levels before you raised the stat. I would never recommend playing Morrowind vanilla though.

                Pretty sure the first character I ever made was like that, or the only one that was decent wasn’t around in the first area. It’s really only a problem early on, but that’s a really bad time to have a problem.

              As LiquorFan said, a weapon skill of below 30 is probably a good sign not to use that weapon. I also don’t think that efficient leveling is really that important in a totally offline game, and would rather set a character up for roleplay or fun purposes, but I understand that for some people the fun is in the efficiency, which is fair.

              Really I just think that Morrowind is a better game in terms of the roleplaying and world, and the mechanics are either better, no worse, or just different to the later games. The magic system is clunky though, but the ability to craft spells and enchantments beyond what you could in the other two makes up for it.

              Not every game needs to be for every person though, and I will admit game design has changed since Morrowind came out. I still think it’s superior, but I can see that some people will not want to play it as it is. I would rather no remake than one with oblivion/Skyrim mechanics, then if people are interested they can check out openMW.

            In all honesty, Skyrim Requiem gives me a good Morrowind gameplay experience without the dated gabbage (bar some sandboxy Morrowind mechanics that I’d like to see again), and I say this having liked the experience of playing Morrowind a couple years ago. There are much better ways to generate the feeling of character progression than dice rolls.

              Interesting, I’ll have to check out Skyrim Requiem. I do think dice rolls are a perfectly valid way of representing character skill though. I’m fine with my characters missing in other games when it appears strange, so I’m fine with its implementation in Morrowind.

      Morrowind is one of my favorite games of all time. Imo, Oblivion needs it more. It’s ugly and the leveling makes it damn near unplayable (for me at least).

        Oblivion is by far the ugliest of them. I was going to write about how the leveling system in it isn’t that bad, but if you mean the level scaling of enemies then yeah that sucks.

          The leveling system was the problem, if you understood it then the level scaling wasn’t a problem. If you didn’t understand how to level effectively the scaling had brutal difficulty jumps.

            The level scaling is still a problem when it comes to item rewards that also scaled. That led to waiting to finish quests until later, or receiving a reward that quickly becomes obsolete.

        Yeah im currently playing theough modded morrowind and all of my mods are exclusively textures, meshes, tamriel rubuilt and skyrim home of the nords. And the game still runs and feels decent save the occasional getting stuck in or on random shit, mind you im playing as a Nord (the largest race) and I can do that in fallout 4 and skyrim so who cares.

    Maybe Oblivion will be the new Skyrim and re-release for the next five or six years until Elder Scrolls 6. I’ve seen a worrying amount of revisionism on Lemmy about how Oblivion is actually the best of the games, which is wrong. Morrowind is by far the best and deserves, but also does not require, a remake.

    I think a really cool and not going to happen thing would be for a new DLC for these older games, alongside official patches to make them work on modern rigs for new players.

        It’s about 90% nostalgia and 10% squinting to read text on a TV so I could find the two places whose intersection is where I need to go.

          If they remade Morrowind I would hope they would improve directions given for some quests, like the first Redoran quest. Having said that I prefer having directions to follow from an NPC rather than a quest marker.

            I’m conflicted, on one hand I don’t want the perfect marker in skyrim, but making you read or listen to a quest to place a marker on the map doesn’t add much compared to just putting a marker on it.

              Some of the quests didn’t place a marker on your map, instead they would give directions from a town or some other point and you would have to follow them. It was much better than the quest marker.

                I don’t think anything put a map marker, but it was all south of Balmora and west of Vivec type directions that functionally made markers. I’m not convinced it’s a huge gain in immersion instead of just circling that area.

                  Another thing was all quest information was written in your journal, so you could open the journal to see what directions were given as you are trying to follow them. If you lost your way you could go back to the start and try again. I feel it is a much bigger gain in immersion as you are using in universe items and landmarks to find your way.

                  The first Redoran quest is a good and bad example of this. They give you directions from a specific spot, as in go up this path this way, turn here, then head in this direction. Really cool for immersion, but the path texture on one of the paths was done really weirdly, and from memory it didn’t show on the map correctly, so it led to missing the turn a few times. If a remake could fix that sort of issue while retaining the good aspect I think a lot of people would realise how much quest markers suck.

        I went back to Morrowind recently and it is still a very charming game that I had fun with. It was revolutionary for its time and it managed to do a lot with the limitations it had. Sure, there are a lot of design elements that are, by today’s standard, quite outdated. And there are systems that are easily abusable or just broken by default. But there’s no other setting quite like Morrowind and it gives you the most flexibility of any Elder Scrolls game. Not to mention having almost 2 decades worth of mods, along with a great open source alternative engine, really helps give it a new lease on life.

        Both. Because of Morrowind I was extremely excited for Oblivion when I was younger, it was the first game I followed development for. I enjoyed it but the uglyness, level scaling, clunky combat which reduced the impact of character stats, walled towns, a shitty imperial city, and a more generic fantasy setting really makes it not as good as Morrowind.

        I was also ridiculously excited for Skyrim since I mainly played Nords and wanted to explore their land. I loved Bloodmoon in Morrowind so it should have been great to have a full game with a similar setting. The shallow guilds and almost near complete removal of character creation and meaningful stats really disappointed me, although the setting is much better than Oblivion and it actually looks fairly nice.

        Skyrim is much better than Oblivion, Morrowind beats Skyrim for me due to depth and meaningful character creation and attributes.

      Oblivion was certainly not the best, but it was a broken mess of a game. It needs a remake because despite all of its bugs and flaws, it was still a very good game.

        The story and the world are excellent, gameplay not bad, character progression laughably broken. The bugs are fun in their own way lol.

    If true, I hope that they leave some of the goofy bugs and ai in the game. I think the weirdness of the interactions between NPCs is part of what made me love the game so much before.

    O: “Heard any news from the other provinces?”

    M: “Nothing I’d like to speak about.”

    O: “Good day.”

    M: “Go.”

    O: " heLLO! "

    M: “Hi.”

    I also loved how the guards would try to attack through through space and time, with a lively “Beuaregeh!” as they hit absolutely nothing.

    Other times, you’d see a guard kill someone, only for that same guard to go up to the body, gasp and shout “there’s been a murder!”.

    I loved some of the messed up object physics too.

    I’m still mad about how much I disliked Oblivion. It had the worst level scaling and psychic guards, and none of the cool weirdness of Morrowind. I also kind of didn’t like Skyrim though, so maybe I’m just not the target audience.

      Ugh and the shit persuasion system had me turning into a vampire every playthru so i could just charm everyone.

      Magic system and Patrick Stewart is all i want carried over to the remake.

      I would love/hate if they got the guy who did the orcvoice to repurpose his role. I can hear his voice clearly even now more than a decade since the last time i played

      Be better? Thats something we won’t know until both are out. Look better? If it’s a full on remake, it will definitely look better than Skyblivion which largely looks like (modded) Skyrim.
