People walking along the banks of the Mersey today spotted what appeared to be a seal in the river.

Johnny Kelly, 50, from Speke, was out on Otterspool Promenade with his family at around 10.30am today (Sunday) when he stopped close to The Britannia Inn pub to capture the waves crashing onto the seafront.

After a minute he spotted something floating in the water, initially believing it to be a sea lion. He told the ECHO: “I was gobsmacked. We were viewing the waves and I turned around and saw it. I thought, how nice is that.
