Even though Will Ferrell’s character was a little ‘left field’ I think he would have made a decent Michael.
Who else could have done it?
Bob Odenkirk was able to play the exact same character and hit the same beats in a season 9 episode but if there was ever a reboot that recast the characters I’d prefer that they not “remake” Michael Scott but create a new character out of the terrible boss archetype.
I appreciate the difference between David Brent and Michael Scott while Odenkirk’s character just feels like out of place fan service (especially the “it’s Michael Scott” line from Pam)
Bob was definitely playing Michael and David- the joke landed very well.
I thought Parks and Rec was going to be a “reboot” kind of thing, and it missed that mark (thankfully, it turned into it’s own art piece). I would love to see a reboot, maybe an Ed Truck (“before the office” kind of thing) or a young David Wallace as the straight character in a different company?
Bob Odinkirk nearly got the role. His performance later as another Michael-like boss makes me think he would have been amazing as Michael.

Honestly I found Ferrell’s character to be so utterly unlikeable that he’s completely put me off the idea even though I like him as an actor.
