Welcome to the Weekly Question Post on c/guildwars2!
This post is dedicated to those questions that you might not think is worth making a whole post about, but sure is worth getting an answer to ;)
Remember to also take a look at the links in the sidebar, which holds lots of great resources and information.
Does anyone know how the time of the release of SotO will work? Sure, it says the release date is August 22, 2023, but because of time zones it won’t be August 22 at the same time on the planet.
My guess is they will follow the time zone of ArenaNet’s headquarters in Bellevue, Washington, which is about 9 hours behind Europe. So when the game releases at 22 of August in Bellevue, the clock would be around 9 CET in the morning in Europe?
Thanks for the help, guys. Here’s an overview of when it will release around the world.
I don’t think we have an exact time yet. My guess would be that they use the same time as with eod or on the regular patch time.
Here’s some data from previous expansions. Combined with the experience that patches generally hit the live servers in the early evening hours
(UTC)
) my guess is between17:00 UTC
and18:00 UTC
which is late morning / before noon at ArenaNet in Bellevue, WA(PDT = UTC-7)

Thanks for gathering the info. Morning seems likely, since it is the where they have the biggest manpower to monitor the start and come up with fixes for critical problems.
it’s also prime time on EU, gw2 has a lot of EU players so it makes a lot of sense
There is info on the wiki about the release
Guild Wars 2: Secrets of the Obscure is the fourth expansion pack for Guild Wars 2. It was announced on March 22, 2022,[1] and the title, features and trailer were revealed on June 27, 2023.[2] The release date will be on Tuesday, August 22, 2023 at 18:00 UTC+02:00.
Guess the kids will be going early to bed that day 😆 18:00 UTC+02:00 is just before prime time on the EU servers. The Americans will have to take a day off to play with the rest of us.
Is buying the living world seasons by playing a realistic goal? 1200 or so gems just for the first one seems like a lot for a new player like me…
@lorty @meldrik Right now on my NA server, the exchange rate to buy 1200 Gems is ~430 gold. You could probably get that in a shortish amount of time depending on how hard you go and what content you play. Whether that’s worth it or not is kind of relative. It wouldn’t be to me, but it might to others.
I would wait till they are on sale, which is often imho.
