Just wanted to say hello to everyone new joining the instance lately. Seems like reddits ideas of introducing paywalled subreddits got a few more people to think twice about using that site.

I just wanted to encourage new users to install a good mobile client for Lemmy. The web interface is OK but the mobile apps really take Lemmy to another level by being much faster and more user friendly.

I personally like Boost for Lemmy and Sync but there are many others to choose from. More are linked in the sidebar.

After you do that, make sure to subscribe to many communities. You see a list under the Communities tab and you can choose to subscribe with a click.

You can also go here and see all communities in the entire lemmy universe:

https://lemmyverse.net/communities

Me and @Buelldozer@lemmy.today are trying to keep the bots and spammers out and it goes pretty well so far.

Hope you like Lemmy more than Reddit, most of us here do… :)

Hello! Thanks for accepting me. I’ve found Voyager on fdroid and I love it! Sadly, lemmy doesn’t have all the subreddit I’ve followed there and the ones we have are not as active as the reddit counterpart. I wish people will ditch reddit for lemmy though

      Welcome!

Reddit definitely has more niche subs thanks to the site population.

Which topics are you interested in? Sometimes it’s a bit harder to find the matching Lemmy community, maybe we can help.

Thanks Mr. Manager for being so welcoming! It seems wayyy better on Lemmy so far. I’m excited to spend more time here. Also maybe it’s just me, but there’s something nice about being part of a smaller community. :)

Yeah, and don’t sweat which instance you join too much. It matters very little outside some fringe cases.

Don’t use an ad- riddled or paid app when there are many amazing free alternatives. Jerboa, connect and thunder are all great and if you find one you like yoi should donate to its creators.

Sheesh, that’s a pretty extreme take on it. I can tell you from experience that donations alone are usually not enough to make a living off of. I would encourage you to support creators who offer their hard work for a fair price, and not just those who give it away for free. Not everyone can afford to be that generous with their time. It’s a good thing you support those who can be, though.

It’s a shame how hard it is to convince people to pay $5 to get rid of something they hate so much. People don’t like to pay for apps, and that unfortunately forces the ad model more than ever these days. Donations are a great thing on paper, but they don’t pay the bills for most creators. I hate subscriptions as much as the next person, but I think creators who charge one-time fees for their apps should be encouraged.

I took the reddit story to imply more that they were going to start competing with substack/onlyfans/patreon/exclusive discords where people could set up paywalls for content, more than that reddit itself would start blocking access to popular subreddits.

I’ve been on this instance for awhile and I really like what you do here. Lemmy as a whole seems to be a much better community. I still post comments on the other site occasionally, but any OC goes here and hit or miss as that content may be at least it’s real people seeing and responding to it rather than throwing training data into the void.

One last edit, I’d encourage new users to look into how deleting works on the fediverse it’s not quite like reddit it’s stickier

      Thank you!

Yeah since the content is federated, it’s no guarantee that anything is actually deleted. Someone could listen to everything that is posted on the entire lemmy network and copy it in real time to some other database.

So never use real names or give up personal details if you care about your privacy online.

Thanks Mr. Manager! I’ve been on lemmy.today for a while and would like to thank you for running a great server!

Do you have a way for users to help contribute at all, monetarily or other?

PS I’ve given most Lemmy apps a try over the last year and I’ve pretty much settled on Connect.

No but I really appriciate you asking. :) I have a good job so paying the server expenses is not difficult. This is also the advantage of using distributed / federated technology - each server can be small and the costs are kept low.

If we gain a lot of users and need to upgrade, we can find some ways for you guys to contribute with some donations, but right now I’m just happy to see people using the instance and enjoying Lemmy.

I hope it can be a small step away from being treated like you are just a consumer on the internet.
