What platforms will Sid Meier’s Civilization VII be available on?

Sid Meier’s Civilization VII will be available on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam (which also supports Mac and Linux) and the Epic Games Store.

The Steam store (preorder) listing shows all three platform icons so I’m guessing they’re not just talking about making it work with Proton.

No mention yet of Aspyr (who ported Civ 5 & 6) as far as I can see.

    The windows version of civ 6 runs better on Linux than the “native” version. I hope they do a better job with 7 but I’m not gonna hold my breath.

      This is true for sooo many games, especially CPU heavy simulation games.

      As long as devs officially support and test the Proton version, I don’t have a problem with it. Sure it seems convoluted… but it’s also a hundred times simpler for the dev, and I don’t think the linux community should shame them for it.

      They also forgot to add the paid DLC to the Linux version, so I had to use the Windows version anyway. However, it’s still always nice to have options!

      Afaik their launchers were the main issue as they only worked in very specific Ubuntu environments. Everywhere else they would straight up not work and you would have to use Proton.

      Luckily, they won’t do launchers again. Unfortunately, they now use Denuvo.

      I’ll wait for some QoL updates and a sale on Ara instead. Can’t stand the idiotic Humankind-like mid game civ swapping anyway.

        I won’t buy it with denuvo, period. As far as game mechanics goes, I’m fine(ish) with what I’ve seen so far but I wouldn’t pre-order.

        When this is the case it’s nearly always a missing library the game (or steam?) didn’t declare as required, ime. If you start the game from the terminal you can usually figure out which library it is and get it up and running, tho it’s usually easier to just use proton

      Same thing happened with borderlands 2. I wouldn’t be surprised if we see fewer native linux games because of proton, but playing basically every windows game through steam is worth it.

    There are no mentions of dedicated ports to linux and mac, only that proton will be able to properly translate for them. That’s not the same thing.

      Is that even an option on the Mac? And “Proton games” wouldn’t show the Mac and SteamOS platform icon on the Steam store.

      We’re also releasing Civilization VII for MacOS and Linux / SteamOS. However, we don’t have specs to share for those platforms at this time.

        We’ll see if they actually create ports or just mean general compatibility through translation layers. Idk about proton on apples.

          Seems pretty clear to me: “We’re also releasing Civilization VII for MacOS and Linux / SteamOS” doesn’t just not mention Proton, there also isn’t a Proton on MacOS Steam. And you don’t get Linux and Mac system sepcs and platform icons on Windows-only games on Steam whether or not you can run them with Proton; you get ”Steam Deck Verified”.

          (I’m half expecting them to walk that back later but for now the message seems clear.)

          What OP quoted doesn’t mention Proton at all and there is no Proton on Mac (at least built into the Steam client)

    They better have cross operating system multiplayer working this time! Friends and I went straight back to Civ5 when we found that we couldn’t even host LAN between linux and macOS

    They’re just mean via proton, which tbh is fine. Everything works great through proton.

      I dunno. There’s no Proton on Mac, so lumping Mac and Linux together when they really just mean Proton wouldn’t make much sense. There are native Mac and Linux games on Steam, and the Steam store page has icons and system requirement tabs for all three OSes, neither of which happens with Windows-only games. “We’re also releasing Civilization VII for MacOS and Linux / SteamOS” also sounds like they’re talking about actual Linux and Mac builds. It could all be miscommunication, of course. That wouldn’t surprise me.
