I started mcr.town to see if there was an appetite for it and I think I’ve conclusively proven that there isn’t!

Unlike Mastodon, where I believe local-based instances are a great idea for all sorts of reasons, it doesn’t really make as much sense on Lemmy where a local sub on any server will do just as well.

There aren’t any (non-bot and non-me) accounts on here so I don’t feel the need to keep things running for any length of time but please let me know if I’m wrong there!

Finally, this doesn’t affect my plans for mcr.wtf in any way at all. On the contrary, I intend to focus more effort there. I love that little instance and the people on it!

This instance (and !manchester@mcr.town) will cease to exist at some point in the next few days.

After thinking it through, I don’t think it really matters. There’s no need for a local instance on Lemmy. I agree a local group would be really great but I don’t think there’s the critical mass on here needed to help one take off and if it did, it’d be just as good on another instance.

It feels more like the Mastodon server https://mcr.wtf is a much better place to put my energy. Although it’s still very small, I’m happy with that because it still gives myself, and other users, a useful to engage with the fediverse and I think there’s much more scope for growth there.
