I honestly don’t know what’s going on there. The sole mod and contributor of the community keeps posting low quality shit purely to bash on Linux and people kept calling him out in the posts and getting banned from the comm for that.

Now I noticed the same mod has just locked comments on all posts to prevent having to ban anyone commenting on their memes

Maybe it does not violate any “moderation” rules but it does definitely violate lemmy.world TOS on several counts

Which ones does it violate, maybe we should get lemmy.world admins on this. I mean they’ve acted on his community before when he used an ableist slur, but they don’t seem to have done much else lately. Though they also might not be aware of how much it has devolved.

As far as I remember: “Attack on people”, “Do not harm(possibly a stretch)” and possibly another one. Granted I do not care for dark humor or vulgar language(even against my own beliefs) but it is very different when it is constant targeting like with this community.

Hmm yeah, that makes sense. Some things there could be considered spam as well, the same way that someone making nonsensical meaningless posts would be not okay (posts like this would probably be considered in that category, and this is most of all that’s been posted there lately).

@kersploosh@lemmy.world What do you think? Does this seem like it goes against LW’s TOS or User conduct rules? Personally I feel like !linuxsucks@lemmy.world is skirting the boundary but there’s times it goes too far.

Agree, even if it does not violate any rule now there should be a rule on communities based purely on bad intent/faith. I’ve seen the posts and while ridicule/comedy is fine, it takes the next step of trying to humiliate people.

A counter example would be some of the memes I have uploaded to c/linuxmemes, it makes fun of our biases and defects but never insulting people.

I just had a mosey through, and oh boy does that person need a hobby. Making fun of Linux and annoying it’s fans is a noble goal, especially here, but they’re not doing a good job.

I love Linux, but everybody needs a good reminder that they’re not the shit, once in a while, and satire/memes are a great way to do that. Too bad that particular mod doesn’t know how to do either.

It’s a shame, because it had the potential to be a great source of creative, self-deprecating humor, but instead, it’s just mean and trite.

Also a lot of the recent posts are nonsense. Not like making points that are wrong, but are nonsensical and meaningless. Like one post which is just a picture of a phone running windows claiming Linux is configurable.

If one wanted to criticize Linux that is absolutely the wrong way to do it.

Yeah, some genuine satirisation of some of the shit Linux fans come out with would be amazing.

They’re completely unaware of how much technical gobbeldygook they come out with most of the time.

I do like Linux, but I’m kind of amused at the insistence that ext4 volumes on HDDs don’t ever need to be defragged. Microsoft said the same thing about NTFS and look how that turned out. Fragmentation is a consequence of having finite storage and can’t be solved by just making a better FS. Throw seek times in and ext4 on an HDD does, in fact, benefit from regular defragging.

That’s not true. Yes there’s differences in how FS’ handle files. ext4 doesn’t need regular defragging because it self-defragging as part of its normal operation. Yes there may be cases where one needs to do a manual defrag on an almost completely full ext4 fs, but those would be extraordinarily rare.

When I talk about technical gobbeldygook, this is exactly what I mean. And FOSS enthusiasts will act like it’s all plainly obvious.

the mod of that community is running a very specific, almost personal, project. i won’t say it’s 100% certainly without doubt satire but those are the vibes. their entire persona/digital characterization is so obviously flawed and reactionary as to give the impression of absurdity. poe’s law type of situation.

a lot of people really dislike the project for understandable reasons. i personally find it entertaining. but the reality is no one is forcing you to see stuff you don’t like. very easy to block the community.

It’s not. I recall someone asking the mod what the point of the community was, and they explicitly said they’re acting in earnest. They don’t just want to satire Linux, there’s an agenda and a mean spirit behind it.

Too bad they are terrible at making biting or satirical points, and they often come off looking uneducated. It’s not really even ironically funny; it’s just kinda sad.

Sure, but that would be a weird thing to lie about. Also, it wasn’t just a three-word “yeah I’m serious,” there was more context to it.

the entire concept of the comm is weird tho. i can’t do vibes based judgement here personally. to me it is silly to take anything such a cartoonish character says seriously, including their statement of earnestness.

“When somebody tells you who they are, believe them.” The cost of me taking them seriously and being wrong is low, and it’s not an outlandish or exceptional possibility that they’re in earnest. The internet is choc full of weirdos with strange fixations, so I see no reason why I should assume they’re joking.

If they’re that bad at conveying satire, and they’re not actually being serious, they should just quit now.

again, fair, my point is i don’t assume either way. i find the community entertaining but i think people should just block the community if it bugs them or report it if they have evidence it’s TOS violating. there’s no way anyone is going to verbally make this guy act right.

Yeah, been loosely following his story evolve, and lot of their stuff is like “that’s so stupid it’s funny” but there’s some other, more serious stuff like defending slavery (us prison shit) and victim blaming (when cops kill) that makes it very slimy and disgusting

A lot of the Linux subs have lively discussions on the pros and cons of Linux. I’ve never seen any instance where legitimate criticism was suppressed. Of course there’s an overall consensus that Linux is a good thing. But that doesn’t stop anyone from arguing a different viewpoint. The fact that this dude has to ban any dissent just shows that he has nothing of substance to say.
