I’ve heard a lot of people want to change app names. Which I’m totally fine with! I’ve heard a lot of love for the name “Voyager”

So, thoughts? Do you prefer renaming? Do you like the name “Voyager”? Any other good ideas?

I think wefwef is a silly name and I’m surprised that so many people in the comment section like it, because I find the name to be cringeworthy (sorry).

But of course, I will still continue to use this app regardless of what it’s called, just like I still use DuckDuckGo as my search engine, despite it having a ridiculous name lol.

Having a silly and unique name helps the app in peoples memory retention. Imagine if it was edgy but forgettable. Nobody will remember it and it won’t stand out amongst the multitude of lemmy apps being developed at the moment.

      Wewef also invoke curiosity.

“What the hell is a wefwef?”

I respectfully disagree with you on the memorability of the name.

I would respectfully suggest that if someone hears the name of this app for the first time, and then had to mention it a week later, they might think “oh what was that silly name of the Lemmy app? Was is wepwep? wiffwaff?”… whereas I would find Voyager to be more memorable, and there isn’t confusion as to how it is spelled.

That being said, there is one area where I concede that wefwef would be a better name than Voyager, and that is SEO (search engine optimisation). If you type “wefwef” into Google (well I prefer to use DuckDuckGo lol), then you’ll find the web app on the first page, whereas searching “Voyager” will give you lots of Star Trek stuff to scroll past.

So if I were making the case for the name wefwef, I would argue the SEO aspect rather than the memorability aspect.

Agree to disagree then. In any case what name it takes, is just second in importance to the usability it provides. And I’m all for that, no matter what it will be called.

            Fair enough.

And yes, I agree that the quality of the app itself is more important than the app’s name.

Coming from the firedumpster reddit has become, and seeing such a civil and polite interaction between 2 users just brings tears to my eyes…

I’m also new to Lemmy (I signed up during the two-day Reddit blackout), but I’m already getting the sense that Lemmy is a classier place than Reddit :)

I just hope that Lemmy will continue to grow, but without picking up the toxicity found in Reddit (and other social media platforms).

Not to mention you’d probably run in to that Voyager app that is a crypto exchange / wallet.

Honestly I don’t understand this take. I mean we all just came from a site called “Reddit”. How does that have anything to do with if we use it or not? And caring about if it’s a “cool” name or not, and then suggesting something super generic and boring… seriously, how old are people who think that way? Are you all twelve, and worried about what your friends will think about you when you’re using weirdly-named apps? Who would give a fuck?

And I want to make it clear that I don’t just object to the argument of choosing another blander name, but to the the notion itself that having boring, unimaginative, derivative, bland and sanitized branded names somehow would be better than unique ones. How simple-minded and devoid of all fantasy and joy and frankyl, a sad life that must be to think that!

Well I honestly don’t understand your take lol. Tell me if I’m misunderstanding something, but you seem to be holding two contradictory views at the same time.

On one hand, you are saying that it doesn’t matter what the app is called. You point out that we previously used a site called ‘Reddit’ and that didn’t have anything to do if we used it or not. You insulted the people who care about the app name by suggesting that they might be 12 year olds who were worried what their friends might think……

And yet, at the same time, you also very strongly hold the view that the app name can’t be a boring/bland name. You went off on a rant about how anyone who does like a so-called “boring” name (well, boring according to you) must be “simple-minded and devoid of all fantasy and joy” and that these people must live sad lives…… But this contradicts your first point about how the name of the app doesn’t matter.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but you seem to be criticising others for caring about the app name whilst simultaneously also caring about the app name yourself. So the next time you argue that an app name sounds too generic and boring, someone might reply “Are you twelve, and worried about what your friends will think about you when you’re using an app with a boring name? Who would give a f***?”
