My wife and I love to binge watch scary movies in October. Looking for stuff that’s truly scary and not just gore. Watcha got?
In no particular order, just as they occur to me
+1 for “Talk to me” it is one of my favourites now, a very well executed story.
Yeah, I went into it thinking ‘standard teen supernatural slasher’ and it was…not that at all.
The Descent is my go-to recommendation for scary without gore. Extremely tense, creepy and claustrophobic.
A newer one I thought was good for not alot of gore was The Night House.
Definitely second The Ritual and Hush.
I’m not sure if it counts as horror per se but Horse Girl was unsettling.
And maybe I’m dorky but The Babadook was actually really good with a kinda happy ending.
And I’m unsure if The Wailing technically fits everyone’s definition of no gore. I mean, it’s not a slasher movie by any means, but there is blood (although its mostly on the living) and ghosts that are definitely dead.
Dropping another a couple others on this list: Last Shift and Creep, ones to watch without seeing a trailer.
Just watched Last Shift and really liked it, thanks for the recommendation!
Late reply, but excellent, I’m glad you enjoyed it. It was pretty much my top film choice before Talk to Me pipped it!
There are different genres of horror. Personally I like mid to late 1970s. Think Halloween with Jamie Curtis, or When A Stranger Calls.
Don’t be afraid to dig into the past, like John Carpenter’s version of The Fog. Or Tobe Hooper’s mini series of Salems Lot. There’s also the 70s classic, Carrie.
If you want to go further back, there are some fun anthology movies from the 60s like Twice Told Tales with Vincent Price.
Carrie ❤ And don’t forget about Carpenter’s remake of The Thing!
Which of the old movies still hold up great? They may have pioneered many things, but since then those things have been so widely used in later horror movies that they feel cliché, even though they did it first, if that makes sense.
Hereditary
SKINAMARINK
Beyond the Black Rainbow
Pulse (2001)
The VVitch
Edit: whoops I thought you were the one asking for recommendations
Nah it’s fine. Always great to get good recommendations. What kind of movies are the other two? I’m not looking forward to another depressing Hereditary experience

Who cares?! 😄 Got Horror movie recommendations? Spit 'em out!
BTW, I thought Beyond The Black Rainbow was a visual treat and an interesting experiment/homage but as horror…meh. 🤷
Fair, tbh
