Some followable kbin places show up when I search Communities, but how do I go about following one that Beehaw doesn’t already apparently know about?

Try searching without the exclamation point? I think that’s all you need to do. I’m new to the Fediverse too. I believe whilst usually federation is instant the massive influx of users means there’s a delay at the moment, so all content should appear as expected as the servers grow and stabilize to match the influx of Reddit refugees.
I think it is just a delay, and maybe some kbin weirdness. I can browse to https://beehaw.org/c/worldnews@fedia.io for instance, but not some other magazines including fedia@fedia.io. Searching for fedia.io brings up posts but no communities, and even searching for worldnews@fedia.io which we know is federated here brings up no results regardless of whether I use the “!”.
