Washington Capitals alternate captain Nicklas Backstrom and president and general manager Brian MacLellan have released the following statements on Backstrom’s injury

Looks like this might be it for Nicky. It’s been on the cards for a year or two now, and whilst I’m sure we’ll all be sad to say goodbye, I’m sure he’s making the right call for himself and his family.

    Guy’s had one of the best careers in the franchise’s history. His number needs to be retired the second his retirement becomes official. (Also 12 should have been done years ago, but that’s unrelated to Backstrom.)
