tldr at the bottom.

So i have been a windows/ android guy for years. I had windows laptops and android phones since the iphone 4. when the iphone 12 pro max came out I thought it looked great and I was in the middle of struggling to get support on my galaxy s20 so i gave it a shot and fully switched back to apple since then.

Recently I had my asus laptop die a week out of warranty ( chipset died needed a $800 motherboard ) and I figured before dropping two or three thousand canadian dollars on a macbook pro I would pick up a cheaper used macbook to try the os out and see what I think as i had never owned a apple computer prior to this.

I ended up with a 2020 intel macbook air, previous owner ordered it with a bunch of upgrades so it has the i7, 512gbssd etc. So far i have been loving it. The screen is amazing for a laptop ( even compared to the oled screen in my old asus ) the keyboard is great most comfortable laptop keyboard i have used in a while, and most of the applications i ran on my windows computers have mac versions available and they all run great. Biggest plus for me of the intel mac is boot camp, the one thing that doesnt translate to mac is forscan and sct updater for updating the tuner and changing as built values on my car.

So far the only thing i have ran into issues with is playing 4k content over hdmi to my tv, it just seems like this macbook just doesnt have it in it to do 4k hdr remux rips, but i have other solutions for doing that and its been a mild inconvenience at most.

So im curious if anyone else has a similar use case for a laptop has found the upgrade to a “m” macbook worth it or should i just wait untill this macbook doesnt get updates anymore

tl:dr : Is upgrading from a 2020 macbook air i7 to a 2023 macbook air m2 worth it for someone who doesnt do any intensive applications?

I’m of the opinion that if your current 2020 MBA i7 is working for you, you can wait to upgrade. The M-series is pretty great, but there’s always something better on the way… M4, M5, etc. If you can wait, wait and see what the future brings.
