What’s the chance apple would ever do this?

Hypothetically, an active cellular watch would be fine paired to an iPad. But when you get down to it, there would be issues. You still need the parent iPhone app for most Watch apps and many iPhone apps aren’t available on iPad. And at its core, the Watch is still meant as a compliment to the iPhone, not a replacement. The addition of cellular hasn’t changed that.

They probably wont because it’s a lot less likely you will have an iPad in your pocket than you would an iPhone.

Apple Watch should be standalone at this point, because there’s a watch app store, iMessage and such all exist on it, even in a neutered form. But that wont happen either. The watch is meant to compliment an iPhone.

Why? Is iPhone too expensive? You can find cheap ones, older models sold like through tracfone can be cheap especially if you wait for a coupon/discount.

The chance is Zero. The iPhone and iPad are drastically different devices with completely different use cases. The watch doesn’t fit with the iPad.

iPhone is Apple’s flagship product and they will never get rid of any of the restrictions put in place to push you to having an iPhone. It’s also a medium for you to buy apps and services - two major revenue streams for Apple and pretty much the future of the company. So no - it’s not likely, and probably impossible that this would ever happen.

I remember MKBHD asking Tim Apple this question. I think his response was something along the lines of data not showing enough demand.
