Why is iTunes still a thing? Wasn’t it supposed to be replaced by the Apple TV app and the Apple Music app?

I’m building a 4K movie collection on Apple TV app, but is there a difference between each platform for buying?

Which do you use and why?

yeah, it’s confusing why iTunes is still around when Apple TV and Apple Music were supposed to take over. i use Apple TV for my 4K movies, not sure if there’s a diff in buying tho.

There is no difference based on where you purchase. On my iPhone, the iTunes Store can only be used for purchases and you view your libraries in either TV or Music. The Apps on the AppleTV are a little different though.

I think that is because of branding purposes and offering familiarity to users. It is easier to brand on iTunes instead of TV.

So that’s an interesting feature because essentially you are looking to buy/rent a movie and the Apple TV app actually points out to you that it’s available on a streaming site, often you might already be paying for that streaming site and so can watch it for free.

You have to remember that those of us building movie libraries are not the majority, and this feature is actually quite a nice touch by Apple to everyday users as they won’t waste their money buying/renting a movie they can already watch on streaming site.

However, I agree it’s frustrating to us as it actually changes the movie quality listed to whatever the streaming site is showing it in, so Apple TV may have a 4K version you can buy but Prime is showing it in HD so the Apple TV page on lists it as HD and you have to search to find the option to buy it but this option does show the quality you’re buying!

Apple Music only allow streaming. Apple made it clear that the iTunes Music Store wasn’t going anywhere

iTunes tv shows and movies are scheduled to be replaced by the AppleTV app, as early as tvos/ios 17.2.

For iTunes music, that has been replaced by Apple Music on every device except windows (which is in public testing).

Ah I’ve just found all the news articles for ITunes shutting down but they’re from four years ago! I thought I remembered something about Apple TV and Apple Music replacing them but was confused why they are still a thing today!
