Hey folks,
Been lurking and reading up on things for a while now, working on a 3-2-1 backup system for my photography.
The Basic Question - considering current WD deals that expire today, what do you think about a single 22TB WD Red Pro for $335 ($15.22/TB) vs two 12TB Red Plus for $380 ($15.83/TB)? Noise is a concern as it’s going to be in my living room (I’m in a small apartment, nowhere else to place it). I know the Red Plus drives are reviewed as being quieter, but I’m wondering if two of them together would be as loud as a single Red Pro, or if the difference would be noticeable enough to change the purchasing decision.
Additional details - they’ll be utilized within a Synology DS224+ with Hyperbackup set up to mirror with an 18TB Easystore (from the last BestBuy $199 deal) and a Backblaze Personal subscription (hence the 3-2-1, and why I’m not terribly concerned with setting up a RAID within the NAS - my main concern is backup and storage, not potential server downtime in case of a single drive failure).
Most of my editing is done off either the SDs themselves or a few portable SSDs, so while speedy transfers and cache is nice it’s also not my #1 concern.
I’ve currently got roughly 8TB of files so there’s room to grow regardless, though going with the single 22TB drive and leaving the second bay open would theoretically make expanding later an easier endeavor.
Btw for anyone else looking at these deals, looks like PayPal has a 6% cash back deal running for orders placed through WD and Rakuten has 5% (probably not stackable, so pick your poison).
Thanks all!
One big one. You can buy a second big one later :)
