Im not much of a gamer (ironically I make games for a living) but I made a bet with my kids that if the Detroit Lions make the playoffs this year I’ll buy them a system, and its looking like almost a lock to happen, so I want to get in on some Holiday deals.

This is their first non-Nintendo system so I’m a little lost on which way to go at this point in the generation cycle. For reference they’re 7 and 9 year old boys and are gonna be new to gaming that isnt based around crafting or Italian brothers. (i made them use my old NES, then SNES first, then got them a Switch a couple years back)

Are you serious? PS5 100000%. All the old games from ps1 to ps 4 got remastered. The options are limitless and that the best console out there and probably will stay the best up until the next Gen which will come in 2028-2030. Don’t even think about it. PS 5 is the best gift ever. They will always appreciate you.

I have both, and I would recommend xbox + gamepass. If they play five games a year off the pass you’re coming out ahead on the cost and there’s a TON of games on there.

An xbox can play literally every game from previous systems. If you want to get your kids the largest library of games possible, I’d go with that.

There are so few exclusives on either console at this point it really doesn’t matter they will be happy with either.

Maybe if you know what more of there friends have, or if you don’t want to have to buy too many games gamepass is generally considered a better service than PlayStation plus.

I feel like it comes down to three things realistically. 1.) Do their friends play games, if so what console are they on? You should at least consider what they are on to make playing together easier. 2.) Do the exclusives from one console over the other catch their eye? Have they expressed wanting to play God of War for example? If so that is exclusive to PS5. 3.) Is a gaming pc an idea in the next few years? If so more exclusives are being released on pc anymore, but the PS5 exclusives are timed releases.

The friends console thing is the biggest factor I’d say, followed by the console exclusives. Good luck, I don’t think you can really make the wrong choice either way!

PS5 will pay off in the long run, I feel. Free games every month with the online subscription service as well.

I think I’d probably go for Xbox over PlayStation for kids.

    Reasons:

The Xbox Game Pass has far more quality and quantity than the PlayStation equivalent, at this moment (though it could change). But it also has the call of duty franchise included from next year, which is going to be a major win for you.

Xbox seems to have a large number of child focussed games, that are not included in the PlayStation pass.

If you get game pass Ultimate for Xbox, if you’re a gamer you’ll also get to benefit on your PC.

IMO PlayStation are producing better single player games though. Bethesda seems to be shipwrecked, while Sony are dropping Spiderman’s and Horizon Zero Dawn on their pass.

IMO PS5 for the exclusives. Xbox only if you want to get the game pass, cuz it’s a pretty good deal for the games it offers. If you already have a Steam library, then a steam Deck + a dock is pretty good also. But it’s a bit more difficult to make things run properly at higher resolutions and if you want game pass you gotta do some modifications.

Just going by the responses, Xbox seems to have an edge with

    - Parental controls

    - Bigger library for gold membership

    - Blizzard acquisition

    - Backward compatibility

    - More versatile

    - More options like lower graphic version

    - Gamepass

But PS5 seems to have some great exclusives and people vouch for their controls.
