I have never forgiven Destiny for ending the base game when the storyline was just getting good.
Can’t believe they then hid the rest of the story behind dlc. Like a game should ship with a beginning, middle and end and only enhance the story more with new branches in dlc.
I’ll never forgive Destiny for putting initial parts of the game behind a DLC paywall that “rotates in and out”.
“Sorry, you can’t do this week’s Nightfall as it requires TDB dlc.”
If a game releases with certain attributes, then those attributes should always be present, DLC should only add to the chassis of the game, never detract from it.
What’s ironic is that for the last few years they’ve even been removing so much of the older content that by the time they do release the final expansion new players will only be able to experience the last quarter of Destiny’s story.
They said it was a necessity so that development on the game could continue at all since they claim that without the support staff provided to them by Activision it would be too costly for them to maintain older content.
All that means to me though is that maintaining old content was expensive and Bungie thought it would be more profitable to abandon that content, not understanding the long term negative consequences that action would have for the game’s playerbase and reputation.
That was a big issue for me when I was trying to get my friend to play destiny 2 with me. So much of the story is locked behind dlc and/or relies on you having played the game consistently for the past 6 years to experience everything as it releases so you can be up to date on the confusing story or new currency/leveling system
I tried to play 4 years ago cause some friends had been playing for a while. There was a token intro quest then it just… drops you in the hub world. I tried following what I guessed was a quest chain, but when I got down to the planet there was just a constant stream of events and invasions and just so much noise. I had no context for anything and didn’t know what was necessary to do or not. I played for 90 minutes and never booted the game up again.
A friend of mine explained that the devs cleared content because console players can’t be expected to have all the data installed on their systems. Which like, that makes sense, but there’s gotta be a better solution.
We only want that because that’s what we used to get, and so we know what we’ve lost…
As our generation passes or moves on from gaming, those expectations of getting a complete and working game on launch day are dying with us… Not long now and all of the gaming community will have come up on this shit and won’t even know any better…
I’ll never really get over how in Mass Effect 3, they locked one of the fairly plot related companions behind a paid DLC on release, despite being a fully fleshed out character with fully fleshed out interactions, connected to the main story. Javik fits so seamlessly into the story, it’s as if he was never intended to be DLC, which I believe was actually the case. The previous game did something similar, except they were additions to the game that came later and with their own story, missions and additional gear. Oh, and ME3 introduced micro transactions to the franchise, so there is that too.
The first time I played ME3 on console was a mess with the way they locked the maximum battle preparation that allowed the best ending behind a weird multiplayer that no one played.
I’m glad the legendary edition with all 3 games fixed that and added Javik and the other DLC stuff
Especially when games keep going up in price. Why pay $69 for a new game that’s broken when I can wait a year for the bugs to be MOSTLY fixed and buy it for $35 instead?
Sadly even Nintendo has fallen into this with 90% of BOTW’s DLC definitely feeling like base game content that was made to be included or a free update but sold as extra instead. I’m gonna add a good portion of Mario Kart 8’s Booster Pass as well, since almost a quarter of the tracks are just ports of Tour and not tracks that Fans actually would have wanted.
The Sims needs to fucking die. Several generations in and we still haven’t made “rain” or “toddlers” a standard in a fucking game that is literally a life simulation.
By all means though, EA keep milking the money teat for $20 a DLC pop to fill out that husk you’re whipping to death.
Any chance you can make a complete edition? No? Still need that money? What a shocker, you shills.
if you’re smart and know where to look, you dont buy a sims game, or at least just the base version. i absolutely refuse to spend god knows how much money on the sims 4 just to get something close to a full release cause ea are greedy bastards and knowingly shipped a below bare bones game just to violently milk more money out of people.
hell with as popular as seasons was in 3 you’d think it would be made base game in 4. lol nope, why do that when you can make people pay for the same thing twice? and when i saw that toddlers werent base game, a feature in pretty much all sims games, i knew ea had dropped any pretense of subtlety
AAA companies releasing games that are basically early-access with zero thought or content.
AND just to put the salt on the wound, adding content that SHOULD have already been integrated with the core of the game, as purchasable DLC.
We, (speaking for just myself really), want a full complete game, that’s all we’re really asking for.

One thing Mario Kart 8 does right is letting you race on all the dlc tracks if they come up online even if you don’t have the dlc

Wasn’t the vaulting of older content a necessity so previous gen users could still play the game?

I tapped out after the second armor rework that they didnt grandfather older sets in to, not grinding for my outfit again, cant do it Bungee.
Then got rid of that good story and replaced it with a bare bones one
Deus Ex: Mankind Divided LOCKED THE ACTUAL END OF THE GAME BEHIND DLC.
Doubling down onto your second point, only releasing that DLC on the next gen so previous gen players miss out
We only want that because that’s what we used to get, and so we know what we’ve lost…

Dexit
Doesn’t AAA just refer to their credit rating for being most reliable to milk the game for their initial investment + profit?

Launch day DLC are pay walls for content and Javik was indeed one such case.

You hit the Cyberpuke nail on the head.
Baldurs Gate 3. That’s kinda Larian’s whole thing. This will almost certainly r/agedlikemilk

Not sure about botw, even though it may feel like base game content, i think it was developed after.
I mean then you got game devs like team cherry that were going to add a bunch of dlcs to the base game which they did for free
Halo Infinite be like
Total War went on my shit list with Warhammer and it’s day one dlc.
Reminds me of Ark that had dlc content before it had even officially launched. It was still in prerelease when the first dlc came out.
FromSoftware has been chunking out well-made, complete games for a while now, at least we have them
The Sims needs to fucking die. Several generations in and we still haven’t made “rain” or “toddlers” a standard in a fucking game that is literally a life simulation.
