Hello photographers! I am a private horse trainer and part of what I have been training the horses to do is specific things for photo shoots such as training them to look a certain direction on command. We expect to have people who know NOTHING about horses or how to control them to book photoshoots so I’m trying to dummy proof everything so I can control the horse from out of shot. Things have been going well but one of the things I will be training next is to use an object as a marker and train the horse to go to where it is on command. This will make things easier however whatever object I use will be in the shot and need to be edited out afterwards. What object and color would be easy to edit out? Some examples of what people generally use are cones, cut and colored cardboard, a square of carpet, a piece of interlocking foam flooring, etc. I would need to use a color other than green and brown/tan as the horse may not be able to see the marker if the ground is the same color. Suggestions appreciated!

I’m just curious if there is a reason you can’t put the horse where you want it if it is trained to stay in one spot and look where you want? I assume the horse will be groomed and look marvelous so you won’t want to mess up the mane and forelock with a halter, but a lead rope draped over the neck to bring it into position and then quickly removed would be easiest - you at least give the photographer one less thing to worry about when working with animals.
Part of it depends on what the background in the photo is. If it is a bright orange cone and the background is nothing but grass it would be easy to edit out. But if behind the cone is the horses leg, a fence, a wall with patterns on it then it is a lot more difficult.
Photoshop has a tool called content aware fill along with clone tools that can make it fairly easy to remove objects if the background is a solid color something repeating with no obvious patterns i.e. dirt, grass etc… With repeating patterns it can still be done but it depends on how complicated the pattern is as you want it to look seamless.
As for colors a bright orange cone, or get one of those green screen colored cones that are fluorescent green. Ideally it would be a solid color no stripes, no black edges etc… If it’s a solid unique color it is much easier to select and replace the object.
