Explanation: The image is from The Onion, a satirical news site, and is making fun of this kind of political cartoon.
The Romans celebrated SATVRNALIA around this time, a jolly winter holiday in which people exchanged minor gifts and snacks, celebrated together, played silly holiday games, wore outlandish clothing, and in general turned the social order ‘upside-down’ in the name of the liberation represented by the god Saturn, and all people were (theoretically, and by custom, not law) equal for the week, from the highest masters to the lowest slaves.
Obviously, the only politically correct holiday to celebrate in this season is the season of LIBERTY! IO! SATVRNALIA!
Sol Invictus – celebrated on December 25
“A widely-held theory is that the Church chose December 25th as Jesus Christ’s birthday (Dies Natalis Christi) to appropriate the festival of Sol Invictus’s birthday Dies Natalis Solis Invicti, held on the same date.”
“Constantine decreed Dies Solis (day of the Sun – “Sunday”) – as the Roman day of rest.”
Should share to Religious Cringe as well; that’s where I thought I was.
Thanks for informing us that !religiouscringe@midwest.social exists 😁
Glad to help anybody who legit hasn’t discovered it.
Also, I didn’t realize this was an Onion bit until after I said this. Of course, that just kinda proves the rule about how you can’t parody nutjobs without sounding like something they would actually say.
That tree, pinned to very probably the remains of its own relative, is undergoing an entirely new type of trauma
Cancelling winter holidays altogether would be beneficial for western economy, don’t tell our politicians who need more taxpayers money…
an even bigger argument for more holidays
(remember: “the economy” == “rich people’s yacht money”)
The “breadcrumbs that fall off the table” of people with high incomes are the only thing that the majority of us is living on, unfortunately. I would rather the economy didn’t collapse right now.

- the poorest already pay for it, the bootlicking “canceling of winter holidays” will not improve things one iota
- your only reward for your hard work will be more hard work, the bosses won’t increase your pay because they now know you’re a pushover and they will use that knowledge to exploit you even further
- your willingness to be a “good worker” and take on holiday hours won’t induce them to have a holiday miracle and suddenly remember to pay you all the back wages they’ve stolen from you
Nah, the scraps on my plate after they stole my dinner is all we’re surviving on.
The money doesn’t magically appear from above, it’s taken from below.
Trickle down economics has been debunked decades ago.
Cancelling holidays in general.
The serfs can rest once they’re too old to work.
