I have to say I kinda feel like you’re wasting your money buying DVDs in 2023. Piracy exists, and even streaming bitrate 1080 or maybe 720p look better than dvd quality. Like no harm, people can stick with what they got, not everything needs to be watched on a home theater size tv or whatever, but there are easier options
bluray otoh I get. I’m still gonna stick with piracy but bluray is good quality and doesn’t require any technical knowhow to setup plex or jellyfin or whatever and torrent. streaming piracy is sketchier and worse quality than bluray so it still has an edge. Plus it’s legal, ig
Oh yeah, DVD is kind of obsolete. But it’s still better for storing media if you don’t want to maintain a rigorous backup regimen.
my backup regimen is the knowledge that there is always a bigger nerd/data hoarder out there who I can torrent it from again later
well that and raid10. Anything that isn’t easily replaceable I do try to cloud back up or smth but if I lose some data I lose some data
The issue is with the lack of people who know how to pirate.
streaming piracy is basically just googling " free online" last I checked, or going directly to a site like 123movies or w/e
There’s also a slow but building effort to bring back brick and mortar video rental stores using a non-profit model. I know at least Seattle and Baltimore have this.
Sounds like a good way to expand libraries
Optical discs will only last a couple decades. That’s why I manually inscribed Oppenheimer into a granite slate
This is why I data hoard the treasure on hdds and still burn my own dvd/cds, with proper storage (in the dark, low humidity and heat if possible) they can last 30-40 years easily. My internet really sucks where I live, even satellite is sketch out here.
