Just finished watching this in cinema. The visuals are great and the music is even better this time than the first. However I thought the story should’ve been condensed and the ending is really unexpected. Does anyone else feel like it should’ve been made clear that this was only half a movie?
Yes. This movie drives me up the wall because there is so much to like about it, but the eway it ends is not good. When watching it at the theatre as it was getting close to the end, I was wondering how they were going to wrap up so much stuff soon or was the movie longer than I thought. When that to be continue stuff happened I was disappointed and a bunch of people in the theatre either groaned or actually audibly complained. I remember some kid shouting “WHAT!” at the top of his voice.
It also imo heavily ruins the film as it stands because it makes the entire film feel like a movie cut in half so I cannot enjoy it over the original Spider-Verse. Maybe part 2 will be great, but imo these two films are always going to be stained somewhat by the fact that they do not open and close well. There’s been films that hint at follow ups that ended way more satisfying that this. Empire Strikes back, Dune, and Fellowship of the Ring come to the mind. Across the Spider-Verse doesn’t have that clear closing but still hint for more that those movies did.

Yeah, my friend and I had the same reaction. We loved it for the most part, but the ending was fairly disappointing because we hadn’t heard about it being a 2-Parter (I have found out since it was talked about early on, but we other didn’t encounter that info or simply forgot as they de-emphasised it in marketing later) and even if we’d known that was coming, it doesn’t really feel like a complete story with a cliffhanger. It just feels like they didn’t resolve much and you have to come back. Even Infinity War at least felt like there was a complete story within itself, it just left the state of the universe dangling for the sequel.
It definitely suffers from a sudden ending, but honestly given how good this movie was I can forgive it. Every single minute of the film was enjoyable, the guest appearances, the jokes and obviously the animation style — Sony Animation has really hit the nail on the head with this one.
I think the way they’re looking at it is part 2 of x, but even when you do a film in x parts, you can still give the movie a bit of an ending for the audience, I know it bothers some viewers more than others.
Yeah. I had the same reaction. I honestly think this is one of the greate 2/3rds of a movie of all time. But, it irks me that it only feels like 2/3rds of 1 movie rather than the 1st part to a 2 parter. I can get over it though and it doesn’t ruin the movie for me, just makes it much worse than it could’ve been. Technically Gwen’s subplot sort of got closure, but Miles was too much of a focus for it to feel like a satisfying mini arc to close on, especially when they still left the cliff hanger on Miles (and I loved Gwen’s arc). Felt like the second to last episode in a TV series rather than a movie like that.
That said, it is my headcanon that they had to do this in negotiation with the studio to keep from making the Spiderverse into another cinematic universe or something. They already had the plot and story written, but had to split it into two parts because of Sony and this was the best point for them to do so while still having enough to work with for a third movie. I don’t have any real basis for this, but it makes sense to me.
You know, I noticed that the movie really slowed down in the 2nd act with a lot of extra exposition and dialog, and while it was a great movie overall, when I met that TBC at the end of the movie, I felt frustrated because I felt like they artificially elongated the movie to split it into two.
Just finished the movie as well and I cannot describe how disappointed I am when I hear the main theme/bgm getting louder and louder, and the editing (how they cuts back and forth between the two) is clearly setting up a cliffhanger. And for sure I’m not the only one that felt the same way in the theatre.
Don’t get me wrong, I love this sequel. They clearly knew what makes the first one so good and they expanded on those elements - art style, music, story, etc. - they did it again and made them better. It’s the only marvel comics/movies/series/whatever that I watched in years just because I really love the first one. But the way they butchered the ending will make this part 2 forever right below the first one on my list, and make myself certain again that I won’t be watching any marvel’s stuff anymore after the final instalment is out next year.
Edit: just learned that the same thing happens to the Fast series as well. I guess it has become the norm now.
