I like a good list, and 2023 left me with loads to chew over. Ultimately I decided on this as my favourite five:

  1. Lies of P
  2. Spider-Man 2
  3. Dredge
  4. Storyteller
  5. Metroid Prime Remastered

Did they have to come out in 2023? If not

    • elden ring
    • disco Elysium
    • death’s door

    In no particular order

Death’s door is really fucking fun if you haven’t heard of it. You’re a crow who works as a reaper in a noir themed office space and you venture into the real world to reap souls but some shenanigans happens and you can reap a certain soul so you get trapped in the real world sorta. It’s fantastic

      Nope, they do not.

Try as I might I just can’t get into Disco. I really struggle with games that require that much reading. I know it’s stupid, and I know it’s causing me to miss out on some fantastic experiences…but honestly I’d rather just read a book.

To me it’s essentially an interactive visual novel. Basically a book in a different form and once I began to look at it that way I enjoyed it a lot more

Alan Wake 2 was one of my favourite gaming experiences in a long time, possibly ever. It will join the list of go-to games I bring up when discussing games-as-art, and I love that there is a recent AAA example of that. It’s innovative, creative, wild and different, and still manages to also deliver a great survival-horror experience in the midst of the weirdness.

It’s a little demanding of you in the sense that you probably want to do the full Remedy “homework” before playing it, but I would say the impact in the end is worth it.

Top 5 of games I played last year:

    1. Xenoblade 3: Future Redeemed
    2. Tears of the Kingdom
    3. Triangle Strategy
    4. Final Fantasy 15
    5. Bloodborne

May be controversial since Nier Automata and Hollow Knight didn’t even make the cut, but Final Fantasy 15 did.

I too played Bloodborne last year and I absolutely loved it.

Played Elden Ring in 2022 and it took over my life. Since then I’ve played Sekiro, Bloodborne, Wo-Long, The Surge 2 and Lies of P. It’s a genre I actually kind of love.

I love them too! Just finished Nioh yesterday. Both Sekiro and the Elden Ring DLC are planned for this year. However, both Bloodborne and Elden Ring get some points deducted, hence Bloodbornes placement at 5.

Elden Ring started to drag once I got to the snow area. I simply got sick of exploring the open world since I hadn’t found anything relevant for my build in quite some time and there are a lot of repeated bosses.

Bloodborne was great, but it’s the only one I don’t feel like replaying anytime soon. There are just not enough weapons or builds in general I’d like to try.

I’m gonna say the remake of Mario RPG that came out last year, because I’m old and I like old games.
