Dunno about anyone else but personally: I don’t care because I can’t afford food each month. Worrying where your next meal comes from focusing your mind somewhat.
By design
What, Rockefeller’s plans coming to fruition?
People do care but they struggle to make change against the rich who do not care
This is absolutely not true, but true for the capital class.
Yeah, there’s alot of people feeling anxiety about it and we can see the world around us sliding, but the people who are ultimately responsible for trashing the environment are the ones who are feeling apathetic. They’ve gotten their wealth at the expense of the planet, and when things get shittier, they’ll hole themselves up in their silos and bunkers, each carrying on with their own Masque of the Red Death, but they’ll succumb in the end.
I wouldn’t say they’re pathetic, I think it’s more that they don’t dare anger the shareholders/owner class.
Shareholders/Owners to C- suits: “What, you’re worried about a few more devastating storms and food shortages? That’s for the poors to worry about! We pay you enough not to care, now back to work making us trillionaires!”
Because god forbid the share price drops 2 points because they’re trying to destroy the planet a little less.
It’s very very true. People are just focused on their day to day. I’m not attacking the individual, I’m just acknowledging that people have bills to pay, kids to raise, personal goals.
Climate change is a societal level issue, so individuals have opinions, and a few options to pitch in, but generally no ability outside of voting to affect mass change.
There’s always armed revolution, but nobody’s going to do that if they won’t even stop voting for climate genocide.
I really do think that at this point, armed revolution is the only thing that will make any meaningful change. We already see that politicians don’t give a fuck about us, corporations and billionaires won’t do anything that will affect their bottom line, and no matter who we vote for, they get bought out. Sure one party is a little less evil than the other here in the states, but we’re coming to a point where the entire system is straight gridlocked because “we’ve tried everything and we’re all out of ideas!”.
Although, should it come to armed revolution, half the idiots with guns will start shooting at their fellow countryman while muttering about [insert hot button culture war topic here] instead of going after the group that is responsible for all this shit. So I dunno.
I’m going to keep voting against fascists and authoritarians, but I ain’t holding my breath that it’ll all get better soon.

me and 20 guys go out and arm up, put on boots and fatigues, fill a backpack with rations and ammo

???

climate crisis solved
no revolution in history had just 20 armed dudes who tought they could individually change the world
Try 20000 and you’ll maybe make a dent.
Against the US military’s resources? Lol. The second shit hits the fan, the military will begin domestic operations to “keep order,” and anyone within their ranks who becomes a consciousness objector will be executed on sight.
You forget that the military is made up of the common person and a lot of people who see and feel first hand exactly what the government fucking them up the ass is like.

And climate change is only one of the several issues that is highly likely to end human’s brief stint on this planet Earth.
Just off the top of my head, another is the impending WWIII beginning with Russian aggression, which after the Civil War pt. II the USA looks extremely likely to not only cease funding Ukraine but I shit you not may literally join hands with Russia to fight WITH them (people in some areas - and not just a handful - are flying 3 flags: USA, Confederate, and either Hungarian or direct Russian, some reputedly at literal police stations / firefighters). And too there’s China, and blah blah so TLDR here: “war”.
Which starts us off with a good phrasing, very biblical 4 horseman-esque, b/c there’s also the next upcoming plagues, which if people are concentrating themselves into fewer, already-built-up areas, is going to expand further. Especially if they are so unedumacashiated (sp) as to willingly volunteer to forego vaccination, for the sake of preserving additional resources for the wealthy.
And famine too, don’t forget the famine. The forces of Automation and Globalization are complex, intricate, and have benefits but also detractions especially within the most wealthy countries where e.g. uneducated workers having their jobs sent overseas may cause them to more readily vote for Trump. Who then spreads vaccine disinformation and advocates for literal war, either on the side of expansionist Russia, or against expansionist China, or somehow even more likely both at the same time, or perhaps he’ll pick on some smaller country merely b/c it’s a Tuesday (hey, remember when he assassinated another country’s military leader? Pepperidge Farms remembers!).
And, full disclosure, having to pay more at the grocery store isn’t “famine”, but REAL famine is happening as well, and as more visible local needs increase, the more remote forms of charitable aid is expected to decrease?
So we’ve got pestilence, war, disease, and famine - I’m just going to call it now: BINGO! :-P
I mean even a cursory bit of online research demonstrates that not only are the vast majority of people aware of man made climate change, they also consider it personally important and a government priorty: https://climatecommunication.yale.edu/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/international-public-opinion-climate-change-2023-appendix.pdf
We’re way past the point of no return if you factor in economics and societal pressure.
I agree with the message but Holy shit this is a awful meme
Fucking egghead scientists, what have they ever done for us?
Well other than making the computer I’m typing on right now. And warning us about the ozone layer before we all got skin cancer. And the sanitation, we were all getting cholera before we knew about separating the poop water from the drinking water. And the airplanes, and trains, and…
But other than all of those things, what have the egghead scientist done for us? Why should we believe them?
When your headline is that every week for the past 20 years it gets desensitizing, yeah.
Stupid take. The headline was true and the call to action happened. But then people went back to doing stupid shit and using chemicals again. You might be too young to remember the ozone hole and how it healed and now it’s getting worse again.
But oh no! Headlines continue to come as they get ignored and things get worse and worse.
Ozone hole is still a ‘W’!
While it increased in size last year that was in response to weather conditions that change year to year. Granted some of that may be in response to Global Warming, so that sucks.
Just like with Global Warming, any changes take place over decades or centuries. In this case the reduction in HFC emissions won’t get the atmosphere back to 1980 levels until 2040. At least we should see this success in our lifetimes: I hope some of y’all see a similar win for global warming, but it’s well beyond average life expectancy for me
The only people that can do something about it at a large enough scale are the governments, and they are too tied into business and industry and keeping ahead of the other governments. Most of the governments know they took a wrong turn but few are willing to leave the race for fear of falling behind.
It’ll happen one day… maybe…
We’re already suffering from devastating storms and droughts. At least the country where I’m from.
You’re gonna care when bread goes past a fiver a loaf.

Biden be like: “Get back into your cars and drive to the office federal workers! We’ve got billionaires to save!”
The truth is that “western” countries will be “fine”. They have the money to build walls(for the rising sea and immigrants), cool and heat all the houses, buy/grow food, infinite energy. The cost of living will increase, the quality of life might decrease but nothing directly societal threatening.
Climate change will mostly affect poorer countries, that are already struggling to survive. Those countries cant really afford to do anything. And people in those countries will have to decide between dying or migrating. So the only “issue” for the “West” is the mass migration that will be caused by climate change.
Emmm…no? Climate change doesn’t mean only the rising sea level and heat, it also mean extreme weather pattern, which include but not limited to cat6 or even worst hurricane, extremely heavy rain, stronger blizzard, and the expanding cold snap, all of which can directly hit all western country.
They can affect a western country but these are not societal threatening issues, not in the same way climate change is for poorer countries.
Every country in the world is going to be affected by climate change. Extreme weather causing growing seasons to change or destroying entire crops will be a common occurrence. Where do you think “the west” will be buying food from if no one can produce it?
You guys are both right. He is downplaying the affect of climate change. It’s not just going to be “some reduction in the standard of living”. You are wrong in thinking there will be no food.
Some crops may not be available year-round, for any price. Right now you can get tropical fruit any month in colder climates. This may go away for many months of the year. Maybe shipping is disrupted by larger storms, so goods take longer to arrive.
Basically it may be like during the pandemic when transportation shut down, and you couldn’t get some goods at any price. That’s more than a “reduction in standard of living”.
I don’t think “the West” will get off so easily once temperatures in Europe drop by several degrees due to the collapsing Gulf stream.
Europe will be like Canada. Even a wild Canada climate isnt that big of an issue. Worst case scenario, we can build giant glass domes, like in scifi.
The West has options and “solutions”. Most countries dont.
Call me apathetic, but since I literally can’t do anything but vote (and even that seems pointless). The only thing left to keep me sane is think “at least I live in a rich country”. I’m not proud of it, but there’s a great chance that me and mine will suffer drastically less than poorer folks and that’s sort of reassuring.
The US is indeed in a very good position, having only two borders and two oceans between everyone else. They just need to get Mexico to mine their southern border, while they mine theirs.
But Europe, Russia, China, India have plenty of them and won’t be able to escape refuge streams or conflicts. Large parts of India might become uninhabitable. Food prices are going to fluctuate. Global trade will become unstable or collapse, disabling the complex globalized industrial economy. Nuclear war is very likely. People still don’t know what’s coming.
