Personally I like the Sentinel in 2/3 the best but in 1 they don’t really have the specific niche purpose that they seem to in the sequels, since all dual classes just get half of the powers from each.

ME1 I just go full Engineer and select AR training.

It’s always AR training.

I keep telling myself that I’m going to do a run with Sentinel or Soldier or anything other than Vanguard…but then I queue up Vanguard and do a complete run making the same choices as always 👍

    It is what it is.

Soldier’s a ton of fun. Everyone craps on it because it’s really plain in ME1, but in ME2 and ME3, they REALLY overhauled the character. In ME2, adrenaline rush is just broken, especially with stuff like the Revenant. (oh, and you get the Revenant on your first playthrough.)

ME3 is ridiculous though. You get all the ammo powers, and you can chain ammo power explosions for everything but warp ammo with concussive shot. It’s kind of cheaty though, because if you take yourself, Garrus, and Ashley and equip everyone with Typhoon V-X, everything dies in seconds.

I’ve never been able to get a handle on the Sentinel class, for some reason.

My favorite classes are Engineer or Adept. I’m doing an Infiltrator run now. I usually pick one class and keep it the entire time

I have occasionally moved to adjacent classes but I pick whether or not Shepard is biotic in the beginning of the run and don’t deviate into it if I don’t originally have it. So for example I did Infiltrator in ME1 and then switched to Engineer in 2 and 3.

Sentinel is really cool because you feel like you’re able to handle anything on your own. You have overload for shields, warp for Armor/Barriers, and throw and cryo as utilities for crowd control. To top it all off, an additional layer of protection that detonates to stun surrounding enemies.

Sentinel plays like a Command and Control unit, you lean heavy into squad combos (Samara and Thane is a good squad build in ME2, lot of combo and anti defensive power options) while playing to the strength of being able to constantly harass everyone around you single handedly.

No one is ever safe with a creative Sentinel on the loose.

I like that the Sentinel ends up having a tool for every situation. It’s good at handling armor and shields in 2/3, and gets a good defense option in tech armor. It isn’t as flashy as other classes, but it’s great all around.

They don’t have any super insane combos or anything, but being the swiss army knife of classes is a pretty cool role in my opinion.

Then again, freezing someone solid and then warping them to shatter or tossing them off a cliff will never not be hilarious.

One of the things I really enjoy about Andromeda is that I can have my toolbox AND flash, by having a Sentinel with Flamethrower, Energy Drain, and Charge! It’s been a fun run.

            An individual of culture!

I run Sentinel: Biotic Charge, Flamethrower, Cryo beam in Andromeda. I alternate freezing and charging with flaming and charging. When I get bored I swap cryo for overload so I can detonate tech as well as with charge. It’s just too damn fun, and being able to choose what biotic power you spec into really makes it fun.

Personally I’d prefer the next game to have classes but allow for freedom of choice in the trees your class has available. Restrict “primary” powers like Charge or Cloak to one per class and make the class evolution look more like “you get two primary power options or an additional two secondary slots” or something. Add ammo powers back in but give them their own slot type, restrict to one for combat adjacent classes and two for soldier. Maybe if you choose to give up the extra primary power slot you get to choose two and can have a combo of ammo and secondary powers in whatever amount you want, etc. Definitely keep passives how they are, I shouldn’t have to give up a power slot because I have tech armor, that’s just the perk of the sentinel. I liked Andromeda’s take on passives and think it should be carried over.

All of these changes would allow for replayability and reduce the Ryder Mary Sue kind of vibe while allowing for true choice within the confines of the class you chose.

I will say AR is definitely the best weapon in ME1. As you get into the game you can basically turn it into a shotgun or a sniper rifle depending on what ammo and gun mods you put on it.

Exactly, the thing is just the most versatile weapon and with unlimited ammo using it exclusively is no problem for any class.

I’ve done a few different classes but think I’m better at distance so assault rifles and such are preferred. Cons like Andromeda would have been grand cos of jet packs and being able to jump in, slash, jump out again but I found ME original series a bit clunky for that.

    So sometimes biotic, sometimes engineer.
