I’m not against regulation of social media such as TikTok, not because of any percieved foreign control of the narrative, but rather simply because of its harm on individuals (addiction, toxicity, dysmorphia, surveillance capitalism, to name a few things).
Fair point. Maybe they avoid endorsing specific products with which they are unaffiliated? Especially since Mozilla gets most of their funding from Google and promote it as a pinned shortcut and default search engine?
I think this is the wrong take. If we want Lemmy to be truly community-controlled, we need many small servers, as opposed to the current situation of one server controlling half the userbase. Also, which server is Facebook-controlled? Lemmy.world is in the minority by federating with Threads.
What does lemmy.world being the biggest have to do with any of this?

At the same time, the power of the EU is, however indirectly, based on the votes of the people, and if enough people disagree they might just change their minds a little. I guess the best thing you could do, therefore, is to spread the word.
I like to compare the EU to an overprotective parent – on the one hand, they want to protect us from all external threats, but at the same time, they want to know all about us and control us.
If you have the time, you could write to the member of the European Parliament who is responsible (Romana Jerković). Otherwise, the best you can do is probably to spread the word and remember to vote next year.

Overnight for a human would correspond more closely to within a year for society, and that’s what I meant.
But I very much fear that even relatively drastic change through capitalism is still going to lead us to disaster.
I think we could, theoretically, take very drastic action. Currently there are more than enough resources in the world to accommodate for everyone and also enough brainpower to reorganise the production and distribution of these resources to stop being dependent on climate destroying practices reasonably quickly. After all, we survived quite well before the advent of fossil fuels, and you have to remember that a big share of all the resources produced went to the richest class.
It is just that all our resources and development potential all lead to the richening of the rich, because that’s just what our economic and political system is hard-wired to do. I would argue that that’s pretty analogous to the experience of Greg – sure, he could theoretically stop drinking entirely very quickly and survive (with some withdrawal symptoms), but his brain; his governing system is hard-wired to continue because of his addiction.
At least it’s better than !technology@lemmy.world… I wanted to say that !technology@beehaw.org is the best by far but then I realised that they’re not federated with you guys.
Edit: There really should be a technopolitics comm somewhere. I wonder whether people would use it if they knew it existed. It would probably also require some proper moderation in these communities.
