  • The literal only argument here is just “I don’t have to use a bunch of Google tabs anymore because ChatGPT can lie to me all in one place!!” lmao

Like, the only way this works is if ChatGPT is literally always correct at all times (which will never be the case fundamentally), because otherwise it’s even worse than the existing process of just using Google because it’s just another step before you end up needing to do that anyway

This isn’t even one of those “oh in the made-up future where ChatGPT is magically perfect, this will be useful, therefore we should support AI-bros right now so we can get there” types of things, this is just assuming that ChatGPT in its current form is somehow a good research tool which is just about the opposite of the case

  • God, passive language in news articles mentioning cops is so beyond parody at this point that I can’t even tell what headlines mean anymore

    cw: animal death

Headline: “Dogs attack woman, police discharge service weapon”

The officer discharged their service weapon striking the animals. The dogs died on scene.

I actually had to look at the article and read that sentence to even tell what they meant by that headline, I was seriously wondering if they just fired in the air or something, I would never use “police discharge service weapon” to refer to cops fatally shooting something lmao

  • We’re literally Canadian and yet my brother was just in here trying to sing the praises of Kamala Harris and Tim Walz to me, I was trying really hard to not tell him to fuck right off

The fact that he’s expecting me to be happy about people who are pro-genocide because of some token “progressive” promises (that probably won’t even mean anything once elected) is infuriating, especially when those promises don’t even affect us in particular

  • Hobby subs mainly, but also that the Linux subs are somehow significantly better than the ones on Lemmy, at least some people on there know what they’re talking about and aren’t just circlejerking about the usual things lmao

I find that the Lemmy community (outside of here and Hexbear of course) is usually not better than reddit, in fact it’s often worse, a lot of the people who moved over are the most reddit logo-brained people around lol

  • I appreciate this comment, I’ve heard it’s gotten a bit better over the past year or so too because they have new body scanners apparently, thank you for the reassurance

Still not entirely sure if I can make myself do it, the consequences of the potential worst case scenario are so absolutely horrible that I have to be absolutely certain it’s not going to happen in order for me to be willing to take the risk, I probably wouldn’t be able to handle even the most basic patdown if the scanners decide to flag me, let alone if a TSA agent decides to be an abuser that day

I really wish though that this pointless security theater organization would be abolished already so that merely travelling internationally wasn’t so much to worry about

  • I use Kobo ones, I had a Touch years ago and currently use a Clara HD, the software isn’t too fast (though maybe that’s different on newer models) but has always been pretty reliable for me, even on the Touch despite its age

Something I like is that it’s integrated with Pocket (the Mozilla-owned service) and can automatically sync articles you add to your list to the e-reader

  • I think I’m finally doing this “touching grass” thing people talk about, I just got an e-bike a few days ago so I’m finally able to get out of the house in a meaningful capacity since I can’t drive and I’m horribly out of shape, this lets me get around to places I need to go somewhat comfortably on my own while still letting me get a decent amount of physical activity (certainly far more than the near-zero I got before)

I’ve done a few trips just for fun and it’s nuts just how much more you pay attention to and enjoy the environment compared to in a car, but today I did a grocery run and it was also very practical, I got a decent pannier bag I can clip to the bike that can be used as a shoulder bag or backpack and it holds a pretty decent amount

  • A few years ago, the bus service in my town made massive cuts to routes and frequency, making the buses pretty much completely useless to me, I really miss taking the bus places

But you know what I’m actually finding I miss the most about it? Having an excuse to actually get some reading done, I have an e-reader and being on the bus was the perfect time for me to use it, these days I rarely touch it because I have trouble focusing on that at home for various reasons, the bus trips were just long enough I could get some decent reading done and the small size and weight of my e-reader made it very convenient to do so, while using other devices was often inconvenient

I almost never read through books, and that bothers me, especially since it means I’m really limiting myself in my understanding of theory, I basically had to fight myself to even get through a good chunk of State and Revolution, I don’t think I ever actually finished reading it

  • Not sure that’s really relevant, the US government could very well deal with situations like this if they wanted to, it’s just that they don’t want to because they are not pro LGBTQ as a whole

It’s very important to point this out too, because the idea that global south countries should be attacked for being queerphobic doesn’t actually exist because the US supports queer people, it’s just using pinkwashing as another way manufacture consent for imperialism among another demographic, people who pinkwash things like this are not actually supporting queer rights themselves when they do so (many people and organizations who do so are in fact actively queerphobic)

  • I read your whole comment, but to be honest, I’m not really sure where to begin with this, because it doesn’t seem like you actually understand the situation and are making weird assumptions based on that misunderstanding

Hyprland isn’t the only window manager, there are others, it’s not like it is an essential part of Linux everyone must use.

I am really hoping you simply haven’t read into the context of this, because in case you’re not aware, this is not about hyprland the software at all or people contributing to it, this is about its main developer contributing to freedesktop.org projects such as wlroots (a Wayland compositor framework used by multiple projects including hyprland)

enforcing basic code of conduct rules

That they wrote themselves and want to apply everywhere. Obviously I’m not for insulting people because of sexual preferences, ethnicity, etc. but we don’t need liberals with a “Code of Conduct” to “protect” people. If a person doesn’t like a community, they don’t have to join it.

As I mentioned, this isn’t about other people joining hyprland, it’s about freedesktop.org, one of the most important organizations in the Linux ecosystem because it’s responsible for many foundational components. Codes of Conduct (along with enforcement of those) are an essential safety tool in these kinds of community, as you simply can’t tolerate Nazis and their ilk in a community like this without them forcing out all of the people who would be targeted by someone like that, who do exist in this community (the person enforcing the CoC in this instance being one of them)

The creator of Hyprland obviously isn’t bothered by having these alt-right/Nazi types in the community and hasn’t been willing to remove them. These liberals certainly won’t make him change his mind …

This doesn’t matter, because it’s not about hyprland, that guy can fuck off to his Nazi cave as far as I’m concerned, we aren’t trying to change hyprland. This is about this person trying to make himself at home in an organization full of the kind of people he targets, who will be under attack if someone like him is allowed this leeway. Those people are already part of this community and need to be kept safe, would you rather they be forced out?

US and NATO are also very pro-LGBTQ, does that mean we need to side with them against African and SEA countries who don’t have a good LGBTQ track record?

To be honest, I find this to be an extremely bad faith interpretation of my comment, and makes it sound like you didn’t even read what I wrote. Again, this is not about liberals using the aesthetics of “queer rights” to manufacture consent to attack the global south, this is a community full of queer people banning an outright Nazi because he is a threat to them. This isn’t about creating the image that the community is supposedly safe for queer people when it’s not, it’s about ensuring the safety of the queer people who are already here and contributing in major ways.

I have to be clear here, your comment is not some principled stand against imperialism, it is very close to being a defense for outright Nazis just because the people they’re targeting for being vulnerable minorities happen to be liberals (you know, like most people in the west), and I really hope that this is just because you have some kind of misunderstanding of what’s actually going on in this situation.

  • I have to be honest comrade, when the events that are going on are “a trans person is being harassed by one of the biggest bigoted serial harassers in the community for enforcing basic code of conduct rules”, I think this kind of comment is unnecessary at best and harmful at worst, this is not a “both sides” issue by any means

This person you showed isn’t even the freedesktop member responsible for the decision

Edit: To clarify, this isn’t a “liberals vs alt-right” two-sided conflict, this is a “Nazis attacking vulnerable minorities” one-sided conflict, if this kind of behavior from Vaxry is tolerated and allowed then that puts all such people in the community at risk, including people like us
