  • I don’t know how easy it is to abuse a system whereby if you want to claim asylum you need to prove you are gay in an interview… It was only as recently as 10 years ago where applicants were literally submitting their own photos and videos to try to prove their sexuality. While this has since been stopped (by Theresa May of all people), I can’t imagine that such a interview process is much less difficult to manipulate or harrowing for an an asylum seeker.

Also the statement that “The UK cannot be the refugee camp for the entire world” is so bafflingly ignorant and flippant that I can barely believe it. Deciding to focus on some of the most marginalized and vulnerable people is revolting.

As others have said, lactose free milk! As another option, my local vegan cafe also offers things like oat milk and coconut milk - and while they don’t quite give the same foam as regular milk, I reckon they make a much better tasting latte.

  • Presses like Fitcarraldo, Charco, 404 etc. are responsible for introducing me to some of the best reads I’ve had in recent hears, from authors like Jon Fosse, Olga Tokarczuk, Helen McClory and Selva Almada. I was introduced to the women in translation month through these publishers and it’s led to some of the most meaningful reads I’ve ever had. I therefore have a lot of love for many of these publishers and it’s fantastic to see so many of them making such an impact.

  • El Orfanato. Watched it as part of a foreign language film club at school when I was about 12/13. Over a few weeks we watched some Ghibli, some great Italian films and then this.

Nothing could have prepared me for this film, I’d never watched a horror movie before. I had nightmares for at least a month, and I’d actually be hesitant to watch it even now because it scared me so badl!

Has to be said though, was a great film and it had me choking up at the end.

  • I picked up an official translation of Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou so I’m gently enjoying that. The art is beautiful and the bittersweet nature of the manga is pretty beautiful honestly.

And also Go With the Clouds, North by Northwest because I love Aki Irie’s art. It’s set in Iceland but reminds me a little of Norway which makes me happy.

I’ve not read it to completion, but the YoRHa: Pearl Harbour Descent (depicting events leading up to NieR: Automata) is certainly very good. As an aside, the NieR: Automata light novels are excellent.

If you’re in to your Yoko Taro there’s also several manga entries in the Drakenguard universe, but I don’t know these so well.

There’s also a bunch of good adaptations of visual novels, like Danganropa and Steins;Gate, but I feel like I’m cheating a little by suggesting those!
