Because VC money has dried up. For a very long time tech companies have had investors throw them basically infinite amounts of money and have proceeded under the idea “we’ll figure out profitability later”, now that money is starting to stop coming in and they are panicking and trying to reach profitability in the shortest amount of time possible.
Loads of issues, majority of their features are completely missing and since nvidia are asshats that keep things proprietary a lot of it lacks equivalents that are of the same quality as their features.
The absolute biggest issue for me is Wayland support being complete crap on nvidia.
The fact that things get divided up by the community itself is a positive, not a negative. The “major” network of instances don’t have to put up with extreme things on any end of the spectrum while those who do want to take part in that get their own bubble and won’t have to cry about censorship.
If it wasn’t for nVidias drivers still being shite I would’ve moved over permanently a long time ago. Either AMD catch up in performance / features or nVidia / nouveau drivers become comparable to Windows counterparts. The day I am forced off of W10 LTS IOT I will be leaving windows instantly, I am never going to use an OS that forces me to log in using their account system.
I think it’s incredibly important to federate with Meta! If we want the benefits of this tech to increase we need larger platforms to join in on the action.
That’s not what’s going to happen. I really don’t understand why people on Lemmy are so fussed about this, Meta are not building a lemmy instance, they are building a twitter clone. While yes you can access Threads content through Lemmy that doesn’t mean it’s going to affect the Lemmy ecosystem. Mastodon is going to be way more affected than Lemmy ever will be.
Just because they are on the Fediverse doesn’t mean it will make sense to use their services through all other Fediverse platforms and vice versa. Following an entire Lemmy “sub” on threads will be a shitty experience and Threads doesn’t have creation of subs as an option, the only viable equivalent features are user posts.
