EXCLUSIVE: The new 28 Years Later trilogy from director Danny Boyle and Sony Pictures is gaining momentum, and some serious star power. Sources tell Deadline that Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Ralph Fiennes have boarded the first pic, a sequel to the original 28 Days Later.

Deadline recently broke the news that the studio has already tapped Candyman director Nia DaCosta to helm the second part of the trilogy, and that the plan is to shoot both films back to back. As for the three newest cast members, the studio is clearly showing it means business, adding star power instead of going the lesser-known-actor route like in previous installments

I’m bothered that it wasn’t “28 Months Later,” but this is what happens when movies take so long to be green lit.

28 Weeks Later rather scuppered that one. I imagine that, one day, someone will get the green light to make a flashback film.

Jodie Comer is going to be so good in something like this, she’s fun to watch. Ralph Fiennes also always brings it.

Can’t wait to see how the 28 Days Later world has progressed, or I guess, regressed.

I’m cautiously excited but still can’t understand why the studio has already planned for a whole trilogy

That seems way too optimistic. I can’t believe we had to hold our breath waiting for Dune 2 to get greenlit weeks after Dune 1 was released, and these guys are already planning on a trilogy.

And what will they call the others? 28 Decades Later? 28 centuries later?

As best I can tell, Alex Garland (with Danny Boyle) came up with the idea and were able to convince the studio to give them the money to do it. I trust Garland enough that he would only commit to this if he had a story to tell but we’ll wait and see.

Uhh, is 28 Years Later going to be a trilogy? Or is this the final movie capping off the two we already have? We did have two, right? 28 Weeks Later was a thing?

    Did I dream it?

28 Weeks Later was a thing?

      Definitely a thing.

Uhh, is 28 Years Later going to be a trilogy?

Yep, that’s the plan - the last part of a trilogy of films is, itself, a trilogy of films. Alex Garland is writing them all and Danny Boyle is back to direct the first one, Cillian Murphy isn’t currently listed as having an acting role but he is an executive producer so it seems pretty obvious that he’ll be in front of the camera at some point.

It does seem ambitious but Garland knows what he is doing and the studios wouldn’t have signed off on the project and handed over a chunk of change without seeing a solid overview of the story arc. So I am optimistic that this is going to work.
