A “mysterious monolith” has appeared in a desert north of Las Vegas.
The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department says the shiny, reflective structure – similar to one found in Utah years ago – was spotted by its search and rescue unit near Gass Peak over the weekend.
“We see a lot of weird things when people go hiking like not being prepared for the weather, not bringing enough water… but check this out!” police wrote on X alongside an image of the monolith.
The discovery comes months after a hiker in Wales captured a video of a mysterious “UFO”-like monolith on top of a hillside along the country’s border with England.
…
Similar monoliths also have been found in Belgium, Romania and the Isle of Wight – an island in the English Channel.
In November 2020, one of the monoliths, estimated at between 10 feet and 12 feet high, was found by Utah state wildlife employees who were counting sheep from a helicopter.
…
Then a week later, another monolith was discovered in Atascadero, California, which is north of Los Angeles.
It’s unclear who is behind the placement of the monoliths. A New Mexico artist collective claimed responsibility years ago.

Sounds like it is clear who is behind it, unless there is some reason to not believe them.

Anyone can claim they did it but I am unsure they’ve provided proof. A NM art collective might explain the more local occurrences but they’ve been found across in the UK and across Europe, which sounds like international pranksters were at work.
They can’t coordinate internationally and/or take credit for the local installations?
These are not technical marvels. They are neat and sneakily placing them is interesting, but the ability to create and place them is something college students anywhere could do fairly easily. The European installations could be copycats or coordinated with the NM collective without anyone even needing to travel.
And I’m pretty sure that is the best explanation, I just want more details.
The one I saw would have been difficult to install without any locals spotting it happen, which they didn’t, so I am very impressed and would be curious to know how they did it.
Probably with some locals.
It definitely would have needed someone with local knowledge as you wouldn’t just stumble across the location. They must have kept very quiet about it as I know someone who lives right by it and they haven’t heard anything. However, as it was in a protected wildlife area, they may have been prosecuted for doing it, so there is an incentive to stay quiet.
The places they were put up in the US are in the middle of nowhere and anyone with a pickup could transport it there.
Don’t know of all the European locations, but my guess is either remote areas or just put up in a way that is fairly quick and easy. They are basically large poles…
Here's my explanation
Somebody put it there
OK, but who put the somebody there?
yer mum
So are you suggesting I did it? I’d be proud to put my name to that. Unfortunately…
So simple. Case closed.
Baffling that no one figured this out sooner.
I might be misremembering, but wasn’t this happening elsewhere like, 2 or 3 years ago, and it was just an art thing someone was doing?
I feel like this keeps happening, and it’s either some advertisment or art project(Or a group of Australians, we’ll have to see if I Did A Thing takes credit for this one.)
Here’s the ididathing video where they built and installed one of the ones from 3 years ago: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j-pKKM6CXr0

The end of the quote from the article does go into that and it isn’t comprehensive as I went to see one near me during lockdown.

I didn’t realise there were any in the UK (or maybe I forgot), and there’s a recent one in Wales: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-68547161
