Had to block all the Dutch and German communities/domains I could find. Not out of spite and I still feel bad about it, but just so one thing in my feed would be in a language I speak.

And…for some reason, OP doesn’t think there are enough Chinese and Russians on Lemmy?

I know there are Chinese users on Mastodon. But since I joined the fediverse last year, I didn’t see any Russian user anywhere, or any Chinese user outside Mastodon.

With my user on Kbin, browsing /all, the only place I see international stuff is on c/worldnews, and not everyday.

Maybe they’re Americans from U.S., but I don’t care about that. I was just referring to the posts I see when I’m browsing all, because the vast majority refer to U.S. things.

Doesn’t Kbin filter based on your language preferences? And even then, English is used by non-native speakers (such as myself) as well, because it’s the language that most people understand and it allows you to speak to a much larger user base.

Lemmy has a language filter in your user settings. And every post/comment has a field to specify language. When I first started I couldn’t see most comments because I didn’t have the right languages selected in my profile.

I don’t mind seeing content in English or other languages. A different thing is to understand what is written in those other languages, except Spanish and maybe Portuguese, French or Italian. But I don’t remember seeing any language filter. But I know there is a language filter on Lemmy.

I’ve checked and you can find it on the settings page in the general section. I’ve briefly tested it and it seems to do what it says, but of course it fully depends on comments and posts being correctly labeled. I suspect that many people don’t correctly label their posts and comments. I know I don’t.

I think international users are just less likely to post local stuff outside of designated communities, because even if there are more international users then they know, 99% will not care about their local issue. For example a swede is less likely to share swedish news and meme, because it is either inaccessible or irrelevant for non swedes, whether they are American or not. But english speaking content is likely to be accessible to most non swedes and swedes.

Americans however mostly don’t share this consideration and just post America specific stuff everywhere.

Exactly, that’s what I saw. As an European myself, I don’t give a shit about DeSantis or Iowa or what mass media has censored. It’s OK to talk about that, of course, but when all my feed is bombarded with US content…

Some time ago (months, or years, I don’t know), I tried to learn Croatian on my own. But I noticed it has the same problem as every other Slavic language: perfective and imperfective forms of verbs :S

The English-language parts on the Net tend to skew American, which is why I picked Feddit.uk for my main account (I have one on L.W) and it’s worked out nicely.

When browsing all, it doesn’t matter whether the instance is in Australia or in Portugal. Because lemmy.world is the biggest one and all the content comes from there, that’s what I see.
