Don’t buy products that require subscriptions for hardware you already bought

This applies to cars as well

I would like to see a legally mandated neon sticker informing customers if something needs an account and/or subscription to use the product.

100%. That shit needs to be displayed like nutritional info or cigarette health warnings.

While I agree, companies collude and soon we have no options.

Moreover, companies often unilaterally decide to cripple something you already have a paywall it after the fact (case in point, this garbage bassinet)

This is where regulation should come in and make this shit illegal

How long before some custom firmware is written for the device to activate all the paywalled features?

The kind of people who would spend $1700 on something like this aren’t the kind of people to track down/install custom firmware.

      Lol yea:

Andrew Gwin, a father who bought the Snoo, told the Times he likened the new pay structure to having to shell out extra to use an iPhone’s camera or a car’s radio.

Won’t take long. One company will do it then they all will. They already want to get rid of net neutrality.

Capitalism loves a scared, captive audience with limited options.

Your government should be regulating this kind of shit so it isn’t possible for these companies to exploit these sensitive moments, they are not. The same breath that suggests this “idea” follows up with an epiphany of surge pricing when the baby has a fever and is crying uncontrollably.
