Dutch and French police on Tuesday shut down a major encryption service used by criminal gangs, saying it even outrivalled illegal communication tools previously cracked by law enforcement, the EU’s judicial agency said.
“Made for criminals by criminals”, police have been able to read messages sent on the MATRIX chat service for the last three months, Eurojust said in a statement.
illegal communication tools
This term seems absurd and disgusting to me.
Chat apps are easy to out together, heck, with a quick google you’ll find a tonne you can just deploy for yourself. If you’ve got bad intentions, you’d be stupid not to.
And with big tech watching along, it only becomes more interesting to make your own. Meanwhile some governments are trying to push trough legislation to scan all your private messages on popular apps like telegram and WhatsApp.
this is not related to the matrix.org matrix, according to this article: https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/security/police-seize-matrix-encrypted-chat-service-after-spying-on-criminals/
Oh wow, this is going to make for some confused and misleading posts and articles in the next few days!
Super helpful, thank you!
I assume this doesn’t mean matrix is completely offline now?
It should be noted that MATRIX is a different entity from the secure open-source, decentralized, real-time communications protocol with the same name, which is perfectly legal to continue using.
From the article that @badcodecat@lemux.minnix.dev mentioned ITT.
