People in Wales are to be automatically registered to vote in elections under new Welsh Government plans. A new law will soon be pursued which it is hoped will boost turnout.
Pilot schemes have previously been announced but counsel general Mick Antoniw has now confirmed the Labour-run government will look at changing the law to make sure everyone is automatically registered. A report by the Electoral Commission, released on September 18, found almost 400,000 people across Wales are either incorrectly registered to vote or missing completely and the current system “does not work well for voters or those who administer it”. It called for “urgent reforms”.
How would you manage that, though?
It’s done in other countries (Australia?), so I presume you’ve just do what they’ve been doing for a bit.
I think they’d need to introduce some kind of electronic voting system to make it as easy as possible for people.
I thought Australia made it illegal not to register or something, also illegal not to vote, but you can cast empty ballots or spoil.
IMO it is as easy as possible right now. It’s like a 5 minute form online on a really good and well designed website, then just show up on the day, show a driving licence or even just an electoral card and you’re sent to the box.
Electronic voting is an absolutely terrible idea and unnecessary.
