A 14-hour siege at a block of flats in Bedford began when two neighbours complained about their takeaway being late and cold.

Paul Burton, 45, and Nathan Turner, 37, who had been drinking vodka and taking drugs, kept the delivery man prisoner in a lift for two hours, Luton Crown Court heard.

Not to hijack the thread but …I’ve been thinking about picking up some shifts with Uber Eats/Just etc etc and this sort of shit scares the crap out of me.

Also had a friend who was working for JE and he got mugged whilst delivering Pizzas. Had to have his earlobe glued back on.

The problem is that (especially in the news) you will hear the very rare horror stories.

The problem is that some people are dicks and if you mix with people then you’ll sometimes meet a dick.

I was in Aldi the other day and the woman beyond the counter was just about keeping it together and she told me that the guy in the queue ahead of me was wearin a motorbike helmet and, when she worked in a corner shop, she’d been robbed by a guy wearing a motorbike helmet and it had clearly given her PTSD.

A friend of mine was thrown out of my local by a local hardman with a running chainsaw. The hardman was later murdered by other head cases.

A well-respected local school janitor was beaten to death with a hammer in a road rage incident on a stretch of road I drive down regularly.

While I live in a relatively nice area I’ve talked to a delivery driver who used to work out of my local depot which is one of the roughest areas around here and it sounded like a war zone - ram raiding the depot, cheeky scores wandering up to couriers with a hammer and taking their keys, etc. He moved to a different depot and, while he delivers in a nice area there have been three vans working out of there that were robbed within quite a short space of time (and it’s not Evri’s vans, it’s the couriers). My niece overheard the horror stories I was telling my brother, which led to a teachable moment about what to do in a mugging.

However, I know someone who works for Deliveroo and JustEats and has never had a problem, neither has a guy I know who delivers for Evri during the day and picks up JustEat work at night.

If you just listened to horror stories (and I’m sure everyone has a million - I restrained myself from launching into my personal catalogue of them) you’d never leave the house. They key, to minimising the chance of having a horrible time yourself is to make sure you work in a nice area. Now that depends on where you are but within 5-10 minutes of me it’s like Beirut and in another direction you get gated millionaire mansions. I suppose a plus of the gig economy is that you can often pick what jobs you do. However, you are in a customer-facing role and you are likely to get shouted at and insulted. You are unlikely to come to actual harm, probably less odds of it happening than down your local.

Yeah, it’s not good and this certainly isn’t the way to resolve complaints. Nobody should have to deal with that when they’re just trying to do a job.
