Scroll down and join a lemmy instance that’s not enormous, just not tiny. You can subscribe to as much content from the vast instances as you like, but you’re less likely to end up somewhere overloaded on your home instance.
(When you subscribe to communities on other instances, the fediverse copies their content automatically into your own instance/feed.)
This way I can get great content from the big lemmy instances and because we’re not so huge we aren’t causing problems on other instances so are less likely to end up in a block list.
Oh, and if you join an instance before it gets huge you can bag the kind of username you could only dream of getting otherwise!
