Halfway through the first day at my new job, the panic/anxiety is palpable, but I think I’ll be fine. Just have to remember that not only am I starting a new job, I am also stepping out of the shift work bubble I had built over a a very long period of time.

We could hire someone with 20+ years experience in the field into our team and we still wouldn’t expect them to be fully pulling their own weight for about six months.

Outdoor furniture is hard to buy. It’s either super expensive or cheap crap that 50 online only stores are selling. I just want a nice wicker sun lounge. Thought I’d found a nice one in a shop but it was tiny and plastic. Sigh.

Not fond of that city myself. I think there’s a subtle difference in the width of the streets and height of the buildings - just sets my teeth on edge. Always feel like something is about to fall over and crush me. Adelaide, on the other hand, has a much more comfortable vibe. Again, I think the actual structure and dimensions are responsible. Brisbane too.

Could pay me to live there, but it would need to be at least 7 figures a year for a part time role so I didn’t have to fuck around with the fucking traffic so much.

Couldn’t pay me to live in nth Qld.

        The hotel:

It’s a very old building situated on top of a pub, so “fun pub noises”, the walls are basically paper, I’ve seen 7 roaches (although no in my room yet), and they don’t do doona covers, they just wrapped it in 2 sheets. Also shared bathrooms

        Sydney:

They call parmas “parmys”, potato cakes “scallops”, the moment we pulled up there was a high speed police chase out the front of our hotel, pedestrians don’t seem to have any priority outside of zebra crossings (or if we do, nobody gives a shit), nobody acknowledges the wave (either for giving away or letting you in), nobody does the wave even if they fucked up, people here have even less chill than Melbourne somehow and are very big into cutting people off, either bikes are allowed on footpaths or nobody cares because I was nearly knocked over a few times

Also it’s not necessarily a bad thing per se, but everything is just very slightly different here in a way that makes me very uncomfortable

None yet, only got here around 10:30 last night so haven’t had a chance yet. Today we’re going on trains, buses, ferries, the Metro, and a tram

Started on Red Dead Redemption and boy this outlaw life is tough. I’m just trying to make an honest living helping collect a few debt payments, someone gets the wrong idea and next thing I know there’s a bounty on my head. I go in to town and get it all cleared up, get on my horse because I want to get back to camp ASAP, and BAM. Major horse collision. I go flying, other rider is dead, and the law’s after me again! I try to run and in the chaos someone else runs under my horse and gets trampled, things are flying everywhere. I try to hide out in a backyard but they track me down and I shoot a few men before dying in a hail of bullets myself.

Oh well. At least I’m not a vampire.

I used to keep a mental list of users with incredible/dirty names when I worked on an IT helpdesk. Some absolute doozies out there.

Couple decades ago a coworker almost made it all the way through a call with a mister baumhal without slipping.

        Almost.

I always wonder why people keep their funny names. If I was a member of Buttnutt, Assdingle, or Tittslap family I would be changing my name the instant I was 18. No way would I go through life like that.

I had a teacher at school called Miss Sidebottom. I was close enough with her to ask her one day whether she got teased for her surname.

That was the day I learned that the name Sidebottom is a powerhouse in the AFL. Both her brothers played and she had other relatives in the sport also. So no, she wasn’t teased at all.

I still hear the name Sidebottom around the sport, some nephew or something I assume. It always makes me think of her. She was a great teacher.

Popped over to the other place via a search and there seems to be a lot of different people in the DT. There are a few regulars I wish had come over here and some have disappeared. That sucks.

It’s a lot quieter here which can be frustrating but at the same time it feels a bit less toxic.

All in all it’s a nice spot.

I usually have both places open in different tabs and flick between the two throughout the day because, as you say, it’s a lot quieter here than the old DT used to be. It’s quieter there too now as well. I miss some of the old regs.

The Reddit DT is pretty quiet these days too. Todays DT thread here has about 20 more posts than the reddit one currently

I very occasionally look at the other DT but not much anymore and I finally unsubbed from the Melbourne reddit but I still use it for other communities that didn’t migrate.

Maybe just a slow day here again.

yeah it’s not good if you want to waste a day just random thread browsing, but a very good chill discussion vibe (not just this comm, also in several others I’m on like the ST one)

I’ve made a mistake, I decided to make 3 small paintings for a colleague who is about to go on maternity leave, I bought the supplies and all but I haven’t got a single ounce of inspiration or desire to paint…help.

What does your colleague like? ( you’re so sweet to always be thinking of making lovely gifts 💗 )

I was just thinking, probably time you kept an inspiration notebook. A notebook of ideas and projects.
