Global shipowners are pressing the UK to diverge from the EU and protect them from competition laws, after the bloc delivered the industry a major blow by axing its exemption from antitrust rules.

The World Shipping Council, which represents the largest container shipping groups, has urged the UK to act as a “sovereign nation” after Brexit and retain the immunity from competition rules that some shipowners enjoy under British law.

Sooo a bunch of the biggest shipping company’s are complaining about antitrust rules…

When people voted for Brexit on the grounds of restoring the country’s sovereignty, I very much doubt that they had in mind it being used to benefit nine vast shipping lines.

If they manage to sway the current government it will not be in the favour of the general consumer. It will result in a cartel if not an actual monopoly on shipping and with it direct price control.

It would be myopic to concede to their requests.

The people didn’t, but those leading the Leave campaigns did.
