I’m not even sure this is the correct sub for this… but hopefully someone can help me out. My daughter is very much into Pokemon, and basically is at a perfect age to be introduced to one of the greatest games of all time, red, blue, or yellow (she loves pikachu). I would love to give her a gameboy or if there’s a cheaper handheld way to play? The problem is, I don’t know if she will like it so I don’t want to spend $200 just for her to reject the game… any advice?

Pizza Boy GBA basic, as silly as the name sounds, is a GREAT emulator for completely free.

I know it’s available on Android, not sure about ipad

My other half has a copy of Pokémon blue, but she didn’t want me fucking with the save game so I went and bought a reproduction. Looks great, plays great too - only about $10.

If you don’t have original hardware, you’re a bit goosed unless you consider the backwards compatible Game Boy Advance.

You may be better off with ROMs and phone emulators instead.

For as close as you can get to the original experience without paying too much:

    1. Get a KongFeng GB Boy from Ebay. This is a knockoff Gameboy color with an IPS screen, although it is a slightly distorted aspect ratio. There are other alternatives, but this was popular a few years ago when I was beginning to look into this.

    2. Get a knockoff reproduction of an original gameboy cartridge off ebay.

Combined this should run you about $50 or so, and give as close to the original experience as is reasonable today. If you have your own stuff, it’s even compatible with trading/battling with original hardware via a link cable.

There are controllers built for phones so they actually attach to it, makes playing these old games very enjoyable

    Search on Amazon, “Android/iPhone controller”

You could try installing AltStore and Delta. It’s a bit involved and you will need to connect to your pc once a week to refresh the apps but it works well once it’s all done.
