I am playing Horizon Zero Dawn and haven’t gotten to the first main event, but it gives me this feeling like if I upgrade all my equipment now it might be for nothing. I know that is not the case, I looked it up, but what are some games that are the worst offenders? One I can think of is Aerith in the original FF7.
Not the same thing, but young me refused to play Majora’s Mask when I found out they took away my horse and all my loot from OoT lmao.
Youre right its not quite the same haha, but I mean it does take away everything that is consumable when you go back to the first day too. Which can be frustrating if you were, say, playing with little sleep and decide to travel back in time with over 1000 rupees only to watch that all go poof because you forgot to throw it in the bank and the last time you saved was over two hours ago…
I finally beat the stone temple and decided to rush over to defeat majora. Unfortunately as I warped to clocktower the was a lighting strike nearby and the power flickered. All progress lost. So many hours lost, I was pissed
Go at it from the perspective of a speedrun. Helps with getting over the hurdle of doing things again.
Wait. You refused to play a sequel to a game because you diddnt get to keep your progress from the last game? Or was it having to regain them throughout the game that you diddnt like
Idk if you are unfamiliar with majoras mask but the game has a 3-day cycle the ends with the cataclysmic destruction of hyrule by the moon crashing down, when the moon hits the town the main character is sent back in time to day 1 without any of their consumables, iconic items like your bow or hookshot are kept indefinitely as they each typically require a significant expenditure of effort to acquire
As a kid, the prospect of losing all your bombs/arrows/rupees/stuff every couple hours was kind of a punishing feeling
I kind of hate that you can’t keep the gear/food that you pick up in the survival shrines in TOTK.
Just to add onto this idea, but MegaMan Battle Network. I prayed they would add a skip tutorial button but even the remaster forced you to learn how to select chips, so a combo, and shows you the sync feature. It’s why I didn’t buy the remaster. :( sad the game doesn’t check for a previous save from the other games and activates a skip tutorial thing.
