I am playing Horizon Zero Dawn and haven’t gotten to the first main event, but it gives me this feeling like if I upgrade all my equipment now it might be for nothing. I know that is not the case, I looked it up, but what are some games that are the worst offenders? One I can think of is Aerith in the original FF7.

Wait. You refused to play a sequel to a game because you diddnt get to keep your progress from the last game? Or was it having to regain them throughout the game that you diddnt like

Idk if you are unfamiliar with majoras mask but the game has a 3-day cycle the ends with the cataclysmic destruction of hyrule by the moon crashing down, when the moon hits the town the main character is sent back in time to day 1 without any of their consumables, iconic items like your bow or hookshot are kept indefinitely as they each typically require a significant expenditure of effort to acquire

As a kid, the prospect of losing all your bombs/arrows/rupees/stuff every couple hours was kind of a punishing feeling

Just to add onto this idea, but MegaMan Battle Network. I prayed they would add a skip tutorial button but even the remaster forced you to learn how to select chips, so a combo, and shows you the sync feature. It’s why I didn’t buy the remaster. :( sad the game doesn’t check for a previous save from the other games and activates a skip tutorial thing.

Youre right its not quite the same haha, but I mean it does take away everything that is consumable when you go back to the first day too. Which can be frustrating if you were, say, playing with little sleep and decide to travel back in time with over 1000 rupees only to watch that all go poof because you forgot to throw it in the bank and the last time you saved was over two hours ago…

I finally beat the stone temple and decided to rush over to defeat majora. Unfortunately as I warped to clocktower the was a lighting strike nearby and the power flickered. All progress lost. So many hours lost, I was pissed

Go at it from the perspective of a speedrun. Helps with getting over the hurdle of doing things again.

I kind of hate that you can’t keep the gear/food that you pick up in the survival shrines in TOTK.

There was an old ds game called drone tactics. I remember at the beginning you had two characters join your party. They were pretty good and I leveled them up a lot. Then they betray you, you fight them for a few missions, and they join your group again.

Unfortunately they join you at a preset level, which was like ten levels less then when they left me.

Knights of the old republic. You max out at level 20, and can’t start putting levels into jedi classes until you get to a certain story mission. So if you’re goal is to put a lot of points towards being a jedi, you need to stay as low level as possible until then.

    Resident Evil Village,

You do multiple playthroughs for upgrades and stronger guns, and then get stuck with the same power level Chris at the end

I remember playing Chrono Cross as a kid and decking Serge out with all my best items, and then suddenly have to body swap with Lynx who came with far inferior items. I was sad.

In SMT 1 after the nukes drop on Tokyo and you travel 30 years into the future, you get informed by some hobo that yen are a thing of the past and that everyone uses macca now. Then you get to watch how the game drains all your money as your characters realize that their current funds are now worthless. Funnily enough, the game is actually bugged and if you have enough money it will actually not drain all of it.

Horizon zero dawn… Just do the quest for the hunting lodge asap :) ;)

    Then everything is gravy.

I found mostly using all your tools is more important than upgrading things.

The opening sequence of Mass Effect 2.

My biotic Shepard was ready to go and then dead within the first 15 minutes. I played the entirety of ME1 just to carryover the character… only to have to essentially rebuild him from the ground up.

I’m just here to take notes, because I despise this mechanic and need to avoid any game that has it.

WARNING: Last of Us 2 SPOILERS below

In The Last of Us 2 mid game when you start playing as abby and have to starting building the skill tree again… it just really killed the flow of the game for me on a level that few games made me feel.

I think overall the game itself is still good but that alone def lowered my score for the game along with some other things.
