I am playing Horizon Zero Dawn and haven’t gotten to the first main event, but it gives me this feeling like if I upgrade all my equipment now it might be for nothing. I know that is not the case, I looked it up, but what are some games that are the worst offenders? One I can think of is Aerith in the original FF7.

Purely out of interest because I haven’t played HZD in a while, but what gave you the impression that you would lose upgrades/progress? Really want to emphasize that this is a genuine question and not shade in any way! 😃

The early story they have you in basically a field, about to go to a huge event called the proving. There is this aura like the guy your with isn’t going to come and you’d be on your own (or maybe grow up a second time) and just have me this feeling like “it’s about to start over.”

Lol, that doesn’t happen at all. I mean you do go off on your own, but you don’t lose your gear. You’re still in the tutorial area.

I wouldn’t spend too much time upgrading green/common gear and do recommend trying to get the purple/rare over the blue/uncommon. Even then, with different weapons, it mattered more about which types of bows I preferred and worked best on which machines (I.e. don’t use fire against fire machines). Slight spoiler: there are times you might not have access to everything due to a quest or cutscene, but you get all your stuff super quick.

I’m playing HZD yet again and just finished the proving. You definitely don’t lose your gear. Even if you’re separated from it, it’s extremely brief before you grab it again.

Random helpful tip: each vendor has a free reward box you can buy. There is no limit to how many you can carry (I’ve had 15+ pages of them). Later on it’s a good place to leave emergency resources since it doesn’t take up inventory space. I leave the ridgewood and wire in them in case I run out at a bad time.

I really hope you enjoy the game. It’s probably my favorite from the last 10 years. It can be a slow burn for some people, but the story revelations hit hard. You also feel like a badass when you master the combat.

It’s an amazing game that I highly recommend! Definitely worth it!

Having played through the whole game and it’s sequel & DLCs, I’m not really sure what OP is talking about. You don’t lose progress or lose gear. Some early game gear might not be as good as you progress the story and you will need to upgrade, but that’s fairly normal with open world games like Horizon.

The way they handled Aloy having no gear in HFW was particularly lazy. “Oh yeah I just lost it, guess I now have to grind from the start instead of just buying more”

What games handle that any better? I can’t think of any direct sequels that actually do anything that isn’t lazy to justify the loss of gear and power, except maybe Dragon Ball Z: Buu’s Fury, since it starts at the previous game’s level cap

Could be as simple as OP being tempted to early grind and bank shards and wood for arrows.
