Im not much of a gamer (ironically I make games for a living) but I made a bet with my kids that if the Detroit Lions make the playoffs this year I’ll buy them a system, and its looking like almost a lock to happen, so I want to get in on some Holiday deals.

This is their first non-Nintendo system so I’m a little lost on which way to go at this point in the generation cycle. For reference they’re 7 and 9 year old boys and are gonna be new to gaming that isnt based around crafting or Italian brothers. (i made them use my old NES, then SNES first, then got them a Switch a couple years back)

    • if your kids like to play A LOT of games, get Xbox Series X/S (1TB). Then subscribe to GAME PASS
    • if you kids like to play sony exclusive games, then grab PS5.

    -–

Xbox series got “quick resume” feature where it automatically “save state” games, so kids can switch back and forth for around 5 games without losing progress, without saving.

so if they suddenly need to do homework, go visit friends, etc. they can simply turn off their xbox. without needing to hunt for save points of checkpoints.

games also can be pinned to “quick resume” so they are always in “save state” condition.

    -–

xbox game pass is basically like netflix, but for video games. you kids will be able to play ludicrus amount of games.

Quick resume is so good, my wife can turn on the Xbox and play her game for an hour, my kid can play an hour of slime rancher and then I can swap to my profile and load up starfield and it’s still on the save screen…

Although certain games can get buggy if you don’t full close them and keep quick resuming mainly multiplayer games

I’ve not had an Xbox in a few years but I did have game pass with my Xbox one. I mean PlayStation plus feels just like game pass. Am I missing something?

I don’t think most of the people gushing about gamepass are even familiar with the ps+ catalog. They might not have as many day 1 releases, but there are hundreds of classic games available. I would say the selection of PlayStation is significantly more to my taste than gamepass.

The day 1 releases are what most people want though. The classic games from PS1, PS2, PS3 are nice, but it’s a joke that they make them exclusive to the highest tier of the service when anybody can just emulate those games on a low end pc nowadays. Almost all the ps4/ps5 games included in PS+ are old news by now, and the monthly games have been complete garbage for months now. They absolutely need games like Spider-Man 2 and GoW Ragnorok to be included for it to be worth the cost.

Xbox Game Pass also includes PC games and EA Play nowadays. It’s got a much richer collection of games, but no Sony exclusives.
