I think this is a very important turning point in Australian politics. For the first time ever the good of the common people have been prioritised over business.
None of this crap about job creation we would get from the LNP. The facts are plain, games are a cost and the losers are the people.
And we can’t justify it as being a PR exercise in the Cold War, we aren’t in the Cold War anymore, it’s turned into a hot war that we backing .
Great call, and it’s annoying the media outlets are by-and-large trying to make it an even bigger deal than I feel it needs to be. I understand that a few sports stars are put out, and regionally speaking it hurts some areas in some respects - but we could be fucking celebrating the fact that a fiscally responsible decision was made, and one that should still provide benefits that are needed more (like housing) compared with the cheap Olympics ripoff the Comms games are.
I think for Andrews it’s a “damned if you do damned if you don’t” situation where the media are concerned. Honestly the media in this country by and large deserves a severe lashing; all reactions and sensationalism and little analysis, absolutely pathetic. I agree with the decision, and was a bit surprised we were going to host it to begin with.
Hey what do you people think of Dan’s decision to axe the com games?

Strong indifference.
heavy GenX vibe
Not unique to just you guys. Millennials over it too.
I’m on the cusp of both.
I’d honestly completely forgot we were throwing it for a bit there heh.
I hope it sparks discussion about the obscene costs and requirements involved with other sporting events too (it won’t though probably).
Yeah found out through that not only were we to host it but we’ve also canned it.
In the current financial climate, I somewhat respect it. But struggle to care much about it.
My friends only became aware of it when the cancellation announcement was made.
I don’t really have much interest in the Commonwealth games and if it’s going to be a massive loss in budget I’d rather go without it.
Could also do without all the intense media coverage too.
I forgot we were hosting it, but I’m glad the funds allocated are being assigned to more pressing issues. I think Dan made the right call.
About the games specifically, I do not care who hosts it. I haven’t cared about the Commonwealth Games for over a decade.
