This happens so often it doesn’t even feel like an Onion headline any more. Tommy Robinson (A UK far right goon) did the same.

Birds of a feather and all that.

Only surprising to people who can’t recognize fascism unless it’s wearing cartoonishly shiny jackboots.

I thought it was well established that SD was a center party, and the neo-Nazi followers long had moved to another party.

Kinda ridiculous how people still try to label them as Nazis.

Them meeting with Israeli is not surprising either, seeing as a lot of the top members are Jewish.

SD is not a center party. They have been and always will be a far right party with some socialist talking points to get votes from the left. (Sound familiar?)

Did you even read the article?

          Just one example

In recent months, the party has been attempting to position itself as “the most pro-Israel party in Sweden” and distance itself from its antiemetic and neo-Nazi past. However, in 2021, the Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet revealed that the party leader in the second-largest city council in Sweden, Gothenburg, Jörgen Fogelklou, had posted antisemitic and racist statements on social media, such as “It is clear that the Jews are the root of all evil in the world.” Two years ago, it was exposed that some party members had connections with neo-Nazi movements even in recent years. For instance, one party member in southern Sweden, Jonas Lingren, publicly supported rock bands advocating for “white supremacy” and used the slogan “Skinhead 88” (88 is a known code for Heil Hitler, i.e., HH).

None of these things have anything to do with left or right leaning. Being racist does not make you far-right, and individuals do not represent the party as a whole. If they did, every party in Sweden would be considered far-right.

            But also:

Jörgen Fogelklou, had posted antisemitic and racist statements on social media,

As far as I know, this was never proven to be him, as it was comments on some account on Flashback.

one party member in southern Sweden, Jonas Lingren

“One party member” that no one has ever heard of does not represent the entire party. You have several “one party member” people with controversal music tastes and ideologies in any party.

Being racist does not make you far-right

Being openly racist absolutely does mean being right wing. What else would it mean? That’s the main platform the right has, they just bury it under euphemisms and pretend it doesn’t exist. The ones who are too stupid to obfuscate their racist remarks are the far-right.

Being right means being capitalistic or conservative. Less welfare, less public projects, more business oriented, more keeping the status quo.

Being racist is not a quality of being right-leaning. Surely you’re confusing the political spectrum with what kind of people tend to lean towards what. Calling someone racist for being right-leaning, or calling someone far-right for being racist is an association fallacy.

Otherwise you wouldn’t be able to be racist and socialist at the same time.

We weren’t discussing a left wing party here, it’s a right wing party that you said wasn’t far-right because of their openly stated racism. I could have been clearer in my response, but I’m saying that by being openly racist (and by maintaining relationships with members who are openly racist), this right wing party is far-right.

You are correct though about the actual distinction between leftism and rightism being support for capitalism, thank you for clarifying that.

Well they seem to have gone somewhere else now, as the politicians with official positions that committed crimes or made offensive comments seem to have been fired.

That statement is absurd, especially in relation to the link. A lot of the articles in there are about top SD politicians, even the recent posts. For example, the comments on it being impossible for jews to be swedish, made by current SD MPs in defense of even higher ranking current SD member. You may not find that offensive – as implied by your comment – but there are jewish groups interviewed in the linked article for that item that seems to find it offensive.

Except that’s not what he said.

He said Jews and Sami aren’t Swedish, as a statement against the forced assimilation that these groups have historically been subjected to. He also clarified that Jews and Sami can choose to be Swedish. Saying the opposite that for example Sami are Swedish can be considered offensive.

Nope. He is saying they ‘can adopt a swedish identity’, but they are not swedish. And that this would be about historic forced assimilation is just wishful thinking, and not understandig ethonational ideology (or defending it). SD has the view, presented by several members in various ways, where nationality is based in ethnicity, you are not swedish if you are a citizen, not if you have a swedish identity, only an essence of your ethnicity can make you “swedish”, in this sense. It is not there to protect their identity as a minority, it is there to cause a divide. What you fail to understand – I’m giving you the benefit of doubt here – is that the offensive thing here is to say that there is something beyond how someone identifies: “I’m a swedish jew”, is met with “ah, but then you are not swedish”, because you have only “adopted an identity”. The “opposite” you bring up is not an opposite of this, because not believing that an ethnic essence exists that makes you “swedish”, is not even close to saying “jews are swedish”.

I have a bunch of midwestern Americans who seem to fit their definition of Swedish- I wonder if they’d be happy for a large wave of Minnesotan emigrants.

      A center party lol

Question: where did you get this information or impression? Really curious.

No, they are far right. I think if anyone called them centrists in Sweden, they’d get laughed at.

People in the party still do and say Nazi things despite their attempts to get rid of them. No party wants to have them in government… Right now they are in a coallotion with no government seats because this shit wouldn’t fly with Swedish society.

They are anti immigrant, racist, transphobic, and dabble in conspiracy theories.

      Edit:

To those who want to understand what SD is all about, here you go, a full list of all their bullshit, cited with links and pictures: (page in Swedish, but any translation extension should do)
