A ban on four cosmetic surgeries for pets came into effect in Quebec today, putting an end to vocal cord removal, ear cropping, tail trimming and cat declawing for aesthetic purposes.

Veterinarians say the non-essential procedures unduly expose animals to risks associated with anesthesia and can lead to behavioural issues.

The Quebec regulation still allows veterinarians to recommend the surgeries for medical therapeutic purposes, and it makes an exception for the ear cropping of stray cats in authorized capture, sterilize and release programs.

Among its other provisions are a ban on euthanasia by inhalation, a ban on leashing an animal without a collar, a ban on mating animals whose sizes are incompatible and a ban on feeding meat to pet pigs.

Wait, is it bad to feed pigs meat? I thought they were natural omnivores. Is this about an issue of feeding them spoiled meat? Or is this the whole “feed a body to a pig” thing?

Cause if someones cleaning murders with pigs, they arent worried about its legality.

This suggests it’s a bad idea to feed them raw meat for a number of reasons. I assume “pet pigs” is key here as farm pigs would be fed properly treated meat and wouldn’t be mixing with other animals. You don’t really want a pet pigs getting a taste for raw meat and blood!

Oh, raw meat for sure. I wouldnt feed a pet raw anything unless I got a vets thumbs up, cooked is safer across the board.

I thought it meant meat, period.

It may do for other reasons but it could just be they went with any meat just to remove ambiguity. You’d need to dig into the thinking behind that one.
